Collaboration is key—bookkeepers regularly communicate with their assigned clients via messaging platforms to gather missing information and clarify transactions. They also work closely with other team members, such as support specialists and onboarding teams, to ensure a seamless client experience. The role offers a structured remote work environment with opportunities to learn new bookkeeping technologies and processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Bench bookkeeper?

To thrive as a Bench Bookkeeper, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, attention to detail, and experience with small business bookkeeping, often supported by relevant coursework or certifications. Accounting & Tax Manager

Irvine, CA • Hybrid

Full-time

Job description

About Us

  • Our client is a fast-growing, tech-forward firm based in Irvine, working hybrid, serving affluent individuals with business ownership, high-W2 earners navigating complex equity compensation, and small businesses that need real bookkeeping and CFO-level guidance - not a shoebox of receipts once a year.

  • We're early enough that the person who joins now shapes how the firm operates for years to come. We believe in keeping it simple, building systems instead of grinding through busywork, and using the best tools available. (Yes, we're a Google Sheets, Mac, and Claude shop. ChatGPT need not apply.)

About the Role

  • We're hiring someone to take over the client-facing seat and grow into a true second-in-command - eventually running the day-to-day so the owner can step back and focus on growth.

  • This role comes with a mandate to build: you'll be recruiting, training, and managing the team as we scale, not just filling a seat on an existing one.

  • A year in, success looks like: you've built real relationships with our top clients, stood up systems that make tax advisory and bookkeeping faster and more consistent, and you're actively growing the team under you.

What You'll Do

  • Own the full relationship for a growing book of tax advisory and bookkeeping clients - year-round, not just April

  • Review (and sometimes prepare) individual and business tax returns; build and implement tax plans that actually move the needle

  • Oversee monthly bookkeeping and financial statement review, including onboarding clients with messy books and cleaning up their chart of accounts

  • Be the technical resource the team calls when they've got a hard tax question and trust to give a straight answer

  • Recruit, train, and manage a growing team as the firm scales - this is a build-the-bench role, not a maintain-the-status-quo one

  • Build and refine the systems and SOPs that let this firm scale without drowning every March and April

  • Talk to affluent clients in a way that makes hard decisions feel simple

What We're Looking For

Required:

  • 5+ years' experience with individual and business tax returns

  • 5+ years' experience with QuickBooks Online or a comparable system

  • Comfortable advising on equity compensation, real estate, and business ownership situations - not just W-2 returns

  • Proven ability to hire, train, and develop people - you've built a team before, or you're clearly ready to

  • A systems mindset - you'd rather build a process once than repeat manual work forever

  • Strong client-facing communication with affluent clients

  • CPA or EA (or actively pursuing)

Preferred:

  • Lacerte experience

  • CFO or fractional CFO advisory experience

  • You have opinions on Jason Staats' content and can't help but poke holes in Karlton Dennis' tax takes

How We Work

  • Hybrid, Irvine-based

  • No time sheets, no clock-punching

  • Eat-what-you-kill upside as you build your book, with a real path to owning how this firm runs

  • We use the best tools, not the standard ones - Sheets over Excel, Mac over PC, Claude over ChatGPT

  • Camera-on, real communication
