Job description

Job Title: District Special Education Teacher (Certified in Grades K-12)ย 

Reports To: Special Education Director and Building Administrationย 

Employee Status: Full Time, Exempt, Certified Teacher Salary Schedule

Job Summary: The Special Education Teacher develops and provides specialized instruction to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities; Creating a learning skills environment; Evaluates and assesses student progress against instructional objectives; follows State mandated due process procedures and functions as IEP Manager to assigned students. Certified staff of Oak Grove R- VI School District have the opportunity to participate in Career Ladder. Staff with two years of experience teaching in a Missouri Public School may earn $1,500 - $5,000 for approved work outside of the school day.

Essential functions of the job may include but are not limited to the following:ย 

Provides research-based specialized instruction to address the instructional goals and objectives contained within each student's IEP.ย 

Assesses student progress and determines the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques.ย 

Establish and implement Positive Behavior Supports and individualized Behavior Intervention Plans.

Instruct and assist students with multiple disabilities

Regularly track, analyze, and report student progress using formal and informal assessments to drive instruction.

Employs various teaching techniques, methods and principles of learning to enable students to meet their IEP goals.ย 

Develops and implements annual Individualized Educational Program (IEP) plans for students to include present levels of educational performance, special education needs, instructional goals and objectives, and the special education and related services required to meet those goals.ย 

Schedules team meetings and works cooperatively with child study team members and others in developing instructional goals and strategies.ย 

Coordinates the delivery of special education services in each student's IEP.ย 

Creates a positive learning experience with emphasis in individualized instruction using appropriate sources including I-pads and Chromebook.ย 

Serves as primary contact for the parent.ย 

Collaborates and communicates with special education team and therapists (OT, PT, Speech)

Provides direction, supervision and evaluation of educational assistants as directed.ย 

Complies with School Board policies and all state/federal rules and regulations.ย 

Completes all district and state reporting requirements on time.ย 

Other functions of the job include but are not limited to the following:

Establishes and maintains student control and discipline in the classroom, school premises or during school activities.ย 

Employs and implements a classroom structure and consistency to encourage student responsibility, cooperation and mutual respect consistent with district policies and procedures.ย 

Collaborates and consults with educational professionals and community service providers (i.e., social services, public health, medical providers etc.) regarding the needs of students.ย 

Provides consultation to classroom teachers regarding classroom adaptions, instructional modifications, adaptive equipment, behavior modification plans and other similar instructional interventions to meet the needs of students with disabilities.

Performs other comparable duties of a like or similar nature apparent or as assigned.ย 

Knowledge Skills and Ability Required:ย 

Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of special education and specialty area.ย 

Thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching of students with disabilities.

Thorough knowledge of school rules, regulations and procedures; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior.ย 

Ability to deliver and articulate oral presentations and written reports.ย 

Ability to effectively an analyze needs and problems objectively.ย 

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with children, students, parents, staff, administration and the general public.ย 

Perform all other related work delegated or required to accomplish the objectives of the total school program.

Knowledge of relevant technology including the use of technology such as I-pads to individualize instruction.ย 

Meet professional teacher education requirements of school district and state.ย 

Knowledge and skills in working with children with ADD and behavior and emotional disabilities.ย 

Must have the ability and proven ability to report to work on a regular and punctual basis.ย

Certification:

Must hold, be eligible for, maintain a Valid Teaching Certificate through the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for the area of application for all grade levels notated above.

Physical Requirements:

Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer and other office equipment, reach with hands and arms, and must occasionally lift, move and/or support up to 10 pounds or more at times.ย

Employment in this position is contingent upon consent to and successful completion of a pre-employment background check, which may include a criminal background check, reference checks, verification of work history, and verification of any required academic credentials, licenses, and/or certifications, with results acceptable to the Oak Grove R-VI School District. Background check information will be used in a confidential, non-discriminatory manner consistent with state and federal law.
