Behavior Technician Intern information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Behavior Technician Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Behavior Technician Intern, you need foundational knowledge of applied behavior analysis (ABA), basic data collection skills, and usually a high school diploma or some college coursework in psychology or education. Familiarity with ABA software for recording and tracking client progress, and CPR/First Aid certification, are commonly required. Strong communication, patience, and the ability to follow detailed instructions help you build rapport with clients and support supervising clinicians effectively. These skills ensure accurate implementation of behavior intervention plans and promote positive outcomes for clients with behavioral challenges.

What does a typical day look like for a Behavior Technician Intern?

As a Behavior Technician Intern, you will spend most of your day working one-on-one with clients, often children with autism or other developmental challenges, under the supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). Your daily responsibilities may include implementing behavior intervention plans, collecting data during therapy sessions, and participating in team meetings to discuss client progress. You’ll also have opportunities for hands-on learning, receiving feedback and guidance from experienced staff to help you build your skills. Collaboration with families, teachers, and other therapists is common, so strong communication skills and adaptability are important.

What are Behavior Technician Interns?

Behavior Technician Interns are individuals who are training to become Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) or similar professionals in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). They work under the supervision of certified behavior analysts to assist in implementing behavior intervention plans for individuals with developmental or behavioral challenges, often including those with autism spectrum disorder. Their responsibilities include collecting data, following treatment protocols, and learning ABA principles in real-world settings. Internships provide hands-on experience and are often a requirement for certification or further employment in the field.
