What is a BDR Sales?

BDR Sales refers to Business Development Representatives who focus on outbound sales activities. Their main responsibility is to generate new business opportunities by reaching out to potential clients, qualifying leads, and setting up meetings for the sales team. BDRs play a crucial role in the sales pipeline by identifying and nurturing prospects, helping companies grow their customer base. They typically work closely with account executives and use tools such as CRM software to manage their outreach. BDR Sales positions are often entry-level and provide valuable experience in sales and business development.

What are some typical challenges faced by BDR Sales professionals in generating and qualifying leads?

BDR Sales professionals often face challenges such as reaching decision-makers, handling gatekeepers, and dealing with high rejection rates during outbound prospecting. It's common to spend significant time researching leads and crafting personalized outreach to ensure higher response rates. Additionally, balancing multiple communication channels—like email, phone, and LinkedIn—while maintaining accurate CRM records can be demanding. However, overcoming these challenges helps build resilience, strong communication skills, and a deep understanding of customer needs, all of which are valuable for career advancement within sales.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a BDR (Business Development Representative), and why are they important?

To thrive as a BDR Sales professional, you need strong communication skills, resilience, and a foundational understanding of sales principles, often supported by a bachelor's degree in business or a related field. Familiarity with CRM software like Salesforce, lead generation tools, and email automation platforms is typically required. Exceptional active listening, adaptability, and perseverance help BDRs build rapport and effectively handle rejection. These skills and qualities are crucial for consistently generating new leads and driving business growth in a competitive sales environment.

Job description

BDR Manager (Foundational GTM | AI Voice & RCS)

Clerk Chat is building AI-powered voice and messaging (RCS/SMS) agents for high-volume, performance-driven revenue organizations. Our customers operate in complex, regulated environments where speed to lead, contact rates, and conversion efficiency directly drive revenue.

We're hiring a foundational BDR Manager to build our sales development engine from zero, owning pipeline generation, outbound strategy, and AI-powered automation across inbound and outbound.

This is a hands-on leadership role for a self-starter who wants to build, not inherit.

What You'll Do
  • Build and scale Clerk Chat's BDR function from the ground up
  • Hire, onboard, and coach high-performing BDRs
  • Own top-of-funnel pipeline across inbound + outbound motions
  • Design and run a high-output, multi-channel outbound engine (calls, email, LinkedIn, RCS)
  • Break into complex, multi-stakeholder accounts with high lead velocity and strict compliance needs
  • Partner closely with Sales on account strategy and pipeline targets
  • Own BDR KPIs: meetings set, SQOs, pipeline created, and conversion rates
  • Build and operate AI-first workflows using tools like Clay, Make, Lemlist, and LLMs
  • Experiment, iterate, and scale new outbound plays as the market evolves

Who You Are
  • A builder who thrives in ambiguity and early-stage environments
  • Hands-on leader who leads from the front
  • Outbound-first, metrics-driven, and operationally sharp
  • Comfortable selling into performance-driven orgs (lead gen, marketplaces, regulated verticals)
  • Excited about AI, automation, and creating leverage with modern GTM tools

Requirements
  • 4-7+ years in sales or sales development
  • 2-4+ years managing or leading BDR/SDR teams
  • Proven success owning pipeline targets and outbound motions
  • Experience building or scaling GTM processes from scratch
  • Strong analytical and coaching skills
  • Experience with CRM, sequencing tools, and sales analytics

Strongly Preferred
  • Experience selling AI, voice, messaging, or API-first products
  • Familiarity with high-volume lead environments and compliance-driven workflows
  • Hands-on experience with Clay, Make, enrichment tools, or custom GTM automation
  • Track record developing BDRs into AEs

Why Clerk Chat
  • Foundational GTM role with real ownership
  • Build the first AI-native BDR engine for voice + RCS
  • Work directly with sales leadership on GTM strategy
  • Move fast, ship often, and see your impact immediately
