Job Title: Battery Pack Test Engineer

Job Description

The Battery Pack Test Engineer executes a wide range of battery pack development and validation tests to support an expanding electric vehicle portfolio in a world-class battery laboratory. After completing mandatory training and mastering lab safety protocols, this role focuses on planning and conducting tests, ensuring high-quality data collection, and delivering accurate, timely reports. The engineer works closely with lab technicians and schedulers throughout test preparation, setup, execution, and post-test handling, while actively contributing to continuous improvement of procedures, safety, and test standards.

Responsibilities

• Complete all mandatory training and maintain full compliance with laboratory safety protocols and procedures.
• Gain proficiency in the use of battery pack test system hardware and software to support daily testing activities.
• Execute test scripts accurately and consistently, using designated templates to generate standardized test reports.
• Plan, prepare, and conduct day-to-day battery pack testing operations, including test setup, execution, monitoring, and post-test handling.
• Create and update standard operating procedures and work instructions that align with safety requirements and battery pack testing standards.
• Ensure all tests strictly adhere to lab safety protocols and established test procedures at every stage of the process.
• Collect, analyze, and visualize test data to validate performance, identify anomalies, and support engineering decisions.
• Keep test requestors regularly informed about test status, progress, and any issues that may affect timing or results.
• Implement best practices in test execution, data management, and test reporting to drive consistency and quality.
• Ensure all test reports meet the highest quality standards, including clarity, completeness, and traceability of results.
• Deliver timely interim and final reports based on test results, addressing ongoing requests and status inquiries.
• Proactively identify, address, and resolve test-related issues, escalating when necessary to minimize downtime.
• Assist in root cause analysis for issues identified during testing, contributing to problem resolution and continuous improvement.
• Collaborate with schedulers to optimize utilization of test equipment and laboratory resources.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant test standards, tools, and methodologies related to battery pack testing.
• Support EV battery pack diagnosis, root cause analysis, and teardown activities when required, particularly for complex issues.
• Contribute to the execution of Design Verification Plan & Report (DVP&R) test plans, ensuring alignment with program objectives.
• Communicate clearly and professionally with cross-functional teams, providing technical insights and recommendations based on test outcomes.

Essential Skills

• Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
• Minimum of three years of experience in a laboratory or engineering environment.
• Practical proficiency in common laboratory tools and instruments used for testing and measurement.
• Experience configuring, maintaining, and overseeing tests according to established test procedures.
• Competence in collecting, analyzing, and visualizing test data to support engineering decisions.
• Knowledge of lithium-ion batteries and their behavior under various operating conditions.
• Understanding of automotive systems and engineering test practices.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for reporting and cross-functional collaboration.
• Exceptional problem-solving and analytical abilities with strong attention to detail.
• Legal eligibility to work in Canada.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Master of Science degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
• Familiarity with AVL PUMA or similar battery test systems for battery pack testing and control.
• Experience using CAN tools such as Vector CANalyzer for communication and diagnostics.
• Proficiency with calibration and analysis tools such as ETAS INCA.
• Experience with EV battery pack diagnosis, root cause analysis, and teardown activities.
• Proficiency in data processing and analysis using MATLAB or Python.
• Experience executing Design Verification Plan & Report (DVP&R) test plans.
• Prior experience or knowledge of ISO or 9001 accreditation processes and quality systems.
• Background in automotive engineering, including powertrain, HVAC, engine systems, or related domains.
• Experience with simulation and analysis tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, Amesim, GT Suite, Flowmaster, Kuli, AVL Cruise, STAR-CCM+, or similar.
• Knowledge of thermal analysis, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and CFD or 1D simulation methods.
• Familiarity with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) environments for system testing.
• Interest in working within advanced research and development environments focused on electric and hybrid vehicles.
• Motivation to grow within a global automotive organization and contribute to long-term electrification programs.

Work Environment

This role is based onsite in Windsor within a fully operational, advanced battery technology and testing facility that supports electric and hybrid vehicle development. The engineer works hands-on with battery pack test systems, laboratory instruments, and specialized software tools for data acquisition, simulation, and analysis. The environment emphasizes strict adherence to safety protocols and standard operating procedures, particularly when working with high-voltage battery systems.

***The position primarily follows a standard onsite schedule, with some off-shift weeks on afternoon or midnight shifts approximately three to four times per year to support testing needs. ***

This is a Contract position based out of WINDSOR, ON.

The pay range for this position is $41.59 - $41.59/hr.
