Job description

The Memphis Grizzlies are seeking a Youth Basketball Coach to instruct children, ages 4-14, in an individual and group setting at various Junior Grizzlies programs in Memphis, TN and the Mid-South. These programs include but are not limited to 1-hour clinics and multi-day camps. Coaches are responsible for teaching the fundamentals of basketball while creating lifelong memories by providing a fun, educational, and safe environment  to all program participants.


  • Provide individual and group basketball instruction for children, ages 4-14, of varying skill levels via drills, stations, competitions, and skill demonstrations.
  • Follow assigned curriculum while also possessing ability to lead self-run drills and activities during stations and at other points during camps and/or clinics.
  • Coach and officiate teams during scrimmages, ensuring equal playing time, and constructive team play.
  • Motivate and encourage participants with a friendly, positive, and caring demeanor. Show constant enthusiasm and assist in delivering messaging about sportsmanship, teamwork, fair play, and similar Junior Grizzlies principles. 
  • Ensure participant safety by monitoring activities and by reporting potential injury and/or disciplinary concerns.
  • Have respectful and cordial interactions with parents, guardians, facility staff and other program customers.
  • Assist with operational tasks such as setup and breakdown, check-in and check-out, lunch monitoring, giveaway distribution, guest appearances.
  • Arrive to camps, clinics, and any other programs in a punctual manner.
  • Take direction from Youth Basketball Manager, Youth Basketball Coordinator, and/or Lead Coach as it pertains to the role and the respective responsibilities that are required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The Experience You’ll Bring

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 2 years coaching experience at the middle school, high school, and/or AAU levels OR 2 years playing experience in college.
  • CPR/First Aid Certification or willingness to obtain it.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Team player, with an ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Good physical condition with ability to demonstrate basketball drills and techniques as required. 
  • Reliable transportation to and from locally and regionally assigned camps, clinics, or other programs. 
  • Must be available for 80% scheduled camps, clinics, and other programs throughout the year.

 Nice to Have:

  • Two (2) years college completion or Associate’s degree.
  • Playing experience at the pro, collegiate, and/or high school level.
  • Knowledge of sports and entertainment, specifically NBA basketball.
