Job description

Job Summary: The Database Support Engineer provides advanced operational support for enterprise databases such as Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and NoSQL platforms. This role handles complex incidents, performs deep-dive troubleshooting, executes changes, and collaborates with L3/Engineering teams to ensure high availability, performance, and stability of database environments. Job Duties: * Monitor database health, performance metrics, storage, and capacity alerts.
* Track scheduled jobs, including backups, maintenance plans, and ETL tasks, ensuring successful completion.
* Respond to alerts from monitoring platforms and perform initial triage based on runbooks.
* Diagnose and resolve common issues including connectivity failures, authentication errors, and query performance slowdowns.
* Gather, analyze, and document logs and error messages to support troubleshooting.
* Process user access requests in accordance with approval workflows.
* Create, modify, and remove database accounts in alignment with security standards.
* Assist users with permissions, connection issues, and basic troubleshooting.
* Perform scheduled operational checks aligned to daily, weekly, and monthly runbooks.
* Validate backup success and coordinate with Infrastructure teams regarding storage issues.
* Support patching and maintenance activities by coordinating or executing steps as appropriate.
* Monitor slow queries, blocking, long-running jobs, and resource contention.
* Provide initial performance assessments and escalate for advanced optimization.
* Ensure all activities follow audit, compliance, and change control requirements.
* Maintain and update SOPs, knowledge base articles, and documentation.
* Document troubleshooting steps and updates within the ITSM system.
* Collaborate with Application Teams, Infrastructure, Service Desk, and Security during incident response.
* Participate in operational review meetings and standups as needed. Key Responsibilities: * Handle complex database incidents escalated from L1 and drive them to closure. * Perform advanced troubleshooting for performance issues, blocking/locking, connectivity failures, and storage-related problems. * Administer database environments including user management, tablespace management, backup validation, and configuration updates. * Execute change requests such as patching, schema updates, parameter changes, and maintenance tasks. * Perform root cause analysis (RCA) for recurring or major incidents. * Monitor and optimize performance using AWR, OEM, SQL Profiler, pg_stat_activity, etc. * Support backup and restore operations including troubleshooting failed jobs and validating restores. * Coordinate with application, compute, storage, and network teams for cross-tower issues. * Maintain documentation including SOPs, KB articles, and configuration records. * Guide and mentor L1 teams to improve operational maturity. Required Qualifications: * Basic understanding of database concepts - tables, indexes, schemas, sessions, locks, backups. * Familiarity with major database platforms such as Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL (exposure is sufficient at L1). * Basic SQL knowledge for simple queries, checks, and validations. * Basic Linux/Windows administration for log navigation, service checks, and file operations. * Understanding of monitoring tools (OEM, SolarWinds, Nagios, Dynatrace). * Knowledge of backup concepts - full, incremental, retention, restore basics. * ITIL process knowledge - Incident, Request, Change. Preferred Qualifications & Skills: * Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field. * Basic understanding of database concepts - tables, indexes, schemas, sessions, locks, backups. * Familiarity with major database platforms such as Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL. * Basic SQL knowledge for simple queries, checks, and validations. * Basic Linux/Windows administration for log navigation, service checks, and file operations. * Understanding of monitoring tools (OEM, SolarWinds, Nagios, Dynatrace). * Knowledge of backup concepts - full, incremental, retention, restore basics. * ITIL process knowledge - Incident, Request, Change.
