Based Learning information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Learning and Development Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Learning and Development Specialist, you need expertise in instructional design, training facilitation, and adult learning principles, often supported by a degree in education, human resources, or a related field. Familiarity with Learning Management Systems (LMS), e-learning authoring tools, and relevant certifications such as CPLP or ATD are typically required. Strong communication, creativity, and organizational skills help engage learners and manage multiple training projects effectively. These skills are crucial for developing impactful learning programs that enhance employee performance and support organizational growth.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in project-based learning roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals working in project-based learning often encounter challenges such as ensuring student engagement, facilitating effective group collaboration, and assessing individual contributions within group projects. Addressing these challenges typically involves setting clear expectations, using structured project guidelines, and incorporating regular check-ins to monitor progress. Additionally, leveraging rubrics and self/peer assessments can help provide fair and comprehensive evaluation while supporting student accountability and growth.

What is based learning?

Based learning refers to educational approaches that center instruction around specific contexts, experiences, or projects, such as project-based learning or inquiry-based learning. These methods focus on engaging students in real-world problems and active exploration, helping them develop critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. By connecting learning to meaningful activities, students are more likely to retain knowledge and apply it beyond the classroom.

•    Paid holidays are provided, including a two-week paid winter break.
•    Anthem PPO and HSA health plans are offered, with excellent dental options.
This is a full-time, grant-funded position with funding secured for an initial three-year term, and IALR is committed to pursuing additional funding to sustain this role and the important work it supports.

How You Will Help the Team
In support of IALR’s economic transformation mission, the Work-Based Learning (WBL) Coordinator plays a key role in expanding high-quality work-based learning opportunities that strengthen the regional talent pipeline and meet employer needs. This role builds strong partnerships with educators, employers, and community stakeholders to ensure students and participants gain meaningful, paid, real-world experiences that prepare them for career success.

With a focus on Caswell County, Pittsylvania County, and Danville City, you will help scale internships, job shadowing, teacher externships, and other experiential learning models that directly support workforce development across the region.

What You Will Do
•    Develop and maintain strong relationships with industry and educational partners to design, implement, and scale paid internships, job-shadowing experiences, and other work-based learning opportunities.
•    Coordinate all facets of assigned work-based learning programs, including program design, employer and participant recruitment, orientations, and ongoing program support.

•    Ensure compliance with institutional, state, and federal program requirements and assist with required financial and programmatic reporting.
•    Represent the Advanced Learning Department at meetings, events, trainings, and professional development activities.
•    Share program information through presentations, meetings, civic engagements, and media in collaboration with IALR’s Communications Department.
•    Work collaboratively across all IALR divisions to support departmental goals and the organization’s strategic plan.

Your Knowledge and Expertise
•    Bachelor’s degree required.

•    Experience coordinating programs, meetings, or events; workforce or training program management experience preferred.
•    Understanding of internship or experiential learning programming, with the ability to identify and mitigate risk when working with vulnerable populations.
•    Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
•    Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking experience.
•    Proven ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with internal teams, external partners, and the public.
•    Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
•    Self-starter who thrives in a collaborative, team-oriented environment and can work with minimal supervision.
•    Valid driver’s license with the ability to travel throughout Virginia and occasionally out of state.

What Makes This Role Different
This is a full-time, grant-funded position with a three-year term that directly supports regional economic transformation through strong education–industry partnerships. In this role, you will have a meaningful community impact by helping students, educators, and employers connect through real-world, paid learning experiences that strengthen the local talent pipeline. The position is based in Danville, Virginia, with opportunities to engage across the broader IALR service region, and offers flexibility through approved flex-location and flex-hours arrangements (up to eight hours per week), based on performance and supervisor approval.
