How to become a BAS tech?

To become a BAS (Building Automation System) technician, you typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, followed by technical training or an apprenticeship in HVAC, electrical systems, or automation technology. Certifications such as the BACnet or Niagara frameworks can enhance job prospects, and hands-on experience with control systems and programming tools is essential for success in this field.

How much do BAS programmers make?

BAS (Building Automation System) programmers typically earn between $60,000 and $100,000 annually, depending on experience, certifications, and location. Skilled programmers with knowledge of programming languages like C, Python, or proprietary systems can command higher salaries, especially in commercial or industrial environments.

What is the most in demand programming job?

Software development roles, including full-stack, backend, and mobile app developers, are among the most in demand programming jobs due to ongoing digital transformation. Skills in languages like Python, JavaScript, and Java, along with experience in cloud computing and agile environments, increase employability in this field.

What is the difference between Bas Programmer vs PLC Programmer?

AspectBas ProgrammerPLC Programmer
Required CredentialsBasic programming certifications, knowledge of BAS systemsCertifications in PLC programming, technical training in automation
Work EnvironmentBuilding automation, HVAC, lighting control systemsIndustrial automation, manufacturing plants, process control
Employer & Industry UsageBuilding management companies, facilities managementManufacturers, industrial facilities, automation companies
Common Search & ComparisonYesYes

The main difference between a Bas Programmer and a PLC Programmer lies in their focus areas. A Bas Programmer specializes in building automation systems, working primarily on HVAC, lighting, and security controls. In contrast, a PLC Programmer focuses on industrial automation, programming programmable logic controllers used in manufacturing and process control. Both roles require technical certifications, but their work environments and industry applications differ significantly.

What are BAS Programmers?

BAS Programmers are professionals who specialize in programming and configuring Building Automation Systems (BAS). They develop, install, and maintain control systems that automate a building's mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, such as HVAC, lighting, and security. Their role involves writing software, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring systems operate efficiently to maximize energy savings and occupant comfort. BAS Programmers often work with various protocols and tools to integrate different building systems into a unified platform.

What are some common challenges Bas Programmers face when working on legacy systems?

Bas Programmers often work with legacy codebases, which can present unique challenges such as outdated documentation, limited compatibility with modern tools, and the need to maintain or upgrade existing functionalities without introducing errors. Collaborating closely with system analysts and end-users is essential to understand business requirements and minimize disruption. Effective troubleshooting, patience, and strong analytical skills are crucial for navigating these situations and ensuring reliable system performance.

Is bas part of HVAC?

A BAS (Building Automation System) programmer specializes in designing and programming control systems for building automation, including HVAC systems. While BAS programmers work closely with HVAC systems, they are not part of HVAC itself but focus on integrating and managing various building systems through software and control hardware.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a BAS Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a BAS (Building Automation Systems) Programmer, you need strong knowledge of HVAC control systems, programming logic, and typically an associate's or bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with BAS platforms like Tridium Niagara, Siemens, or Honeywell, and certifications such as Niagara AX/N4 or equivalent, are often required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are crucial for collaborating with teams and addressing client needs. These skills ensure reliable system performance, energy efficiency, and successful project implementation in complex building environments.

Job description

Controls Engineer

Controls Engineer (HVAC Controls)
Position Overview
We are seeking a Controls Engineer to design, program, commission, and support HVAC control systems for commercial and industrial buildings. The role focuses on developing reliable control strategies, implementing ACL-based control logic, integrating building automation systems, and ensuring HVAC equipment operates efficiently and meets project requirements. The ideal candidate combines strong controls engineering fundamentals with hands-on experience in HVAC controls and commissioning.
Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and document control strategies and sequences for HVAC systems using ACL and other control logic tools.
  • Program, configure, and troubleshoot DDC/PLC controllers and building automation systems (BAS/BMS) to implement HVAC controls and integration with other building systems.
  • Commission, test, and validate HVAC control systems on site; perform functional testing, balance checks, and startup support to ensure proper operation.
  • Develop and maintain control system documentation, including I/O lists, sequence of operations, wiring diagrams, schematics, and loop tuning reports.
  • Integrate third-party equipment and protocols (e.g., BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks) with the BAS; coordinate with vendors and subcontractors to resolve interoperability issues.
  • Perform root-cause analysis and provide field troubleshooting and corrective actions for control system faults and performance issues.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and project management teams to deliver projects on schedule and to specification; participate in design reviews and value engineering.
  • Provide training and technical support to clients, operators, and maintenance staff on HVAC control system operation and best practices.
  • Keep current with industry standards, codes, and best practices for HVAC controls and building automation systems.
  • Support proposals, cost estimates, and project documentation related to controls work as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Controls, or related engineering discipline; or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in controls engineering with a focus on HVAC controls and building automation systems.
  • Proven experience developing control logic using ACL or similar automation control logic tools and programming environments.
  • Hands-on experience with DDC/PLC programming and configuration; familiarity with common BAS platforms (e.g., Niagara, Tridium, Johnson Controls, Honeywell, Schneider Electric) preferred.
  • Knowledge of HVAC equipment and systems (AHUs, chillers, boilers, VAV, pumps, fans) and sequence-of-operations development.
  • Experience with communication protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, and TCP/IP for building systems integration.
  • Field commissioning and troubleshooting experience, with the ability to work on-site and perform hands-on testing.
  • Strong technical documentation skills and proficiency with AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, and BAS configuration tools.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and interact with clients.
  • Valid drivers license and ability to travel to project sites; relevant certifications (e.g., BTL, BMS, controls certifications) are a plus.
