Job Summary:

The Barn laborer is responsible for maintaining the daily operations and cleanliness of the barn while ensuring the well-being of the birds. This role involves following all Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), UEP (United Egg Producers) guidelines, and Salmonella Enteritis requirements. The Barn Laborer will perform essential tasks in a timely and efficient manner, ensuring that the farm operates smoothly. Additionally, the associate may be asked to perform additional tasks as needed by management.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Shower daily in and out of the facility to maintain personal hygiene and cleanliness due to the nature of the work environment.
  • Walk the fronts of the barn and clean transfer fingers regularly.
  • Inspect aisles for egg jams, take corrective actions, or report the issue.
  • Check water levels in the barn in the morning and before leaving, ensuring proper documentation with time and initials.
  • Euthanize any sick or injured birds, documenting the reason and the number of birds euthanized in the Euthanasia record.
  • Pick up floor eggs twice per shift (AM/PM).
  • Ensure egg belts are properly aligned and run smoothly.
  • Report any feed spills on manure belts to management.
  • Move birds as needed and ensure all eggs are placed on the belt for collection.
  • Regularly inspect and ensure that all lights are working; replace bulbs as necessary.
  • Clean a minimum of 30 cages daily to maintain cleanliness and hygiene.
  • Use the last 30-45 minutes of the shift to clean the fronts of the barn.
  • Clean cobwebs twice a month to maintain a clean and safe environment.
  • Monitor the barn temperature, and if it feels unusually warm, inform management immediately.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by management or senior staff that fall outside of the standard job description as necessary.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Basic record-keeping ability for documenting euthanasia records, water checks, and other tasks.
  • Strong observational skills to identify issues such as egg jams, feed spills, or equipment malfunctions.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to follow all GMP, SOP, and regulatory guidelines.
  • Strong communication skills to report issues to management.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and meet daily task deadlines.

Education and Experience:

  • No prior experience required; on-the-job training will be provided.
  • Previous experience in agricultural, farm, or animal care settings is helpful but not mandatory.
  • Basic familiarity with routine maintenance tasks, such as cleaning, inspecting, and minor repairs, is beneficial.

Physical Requirements:

  • Shower daily in and out of the facility to maintain personal hygiene and cleanliness due to the nature of the work environment.
  • Physical stamina and ability to lift, bend, and move about the barn for long periods.
  • Must be able to work in various weather conditions (heat, cold, humidity).
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. regularly.
  • Capable of standing, bending, and walking for long durations.
