What is the bar exam?

The bar exam is a professional licensing test that law school graduates must pass to practice law in a specific jurisdiction, such as a U.S. state. It typically consists of multiple sections, including essay questions, multiple-choice questions, and performance tests, designed to assess knowledge of legal principles and the ability to apply them. Passing the bar exam is a requirement for becoming a licensed attorney and is often followed by additional character and fitness assessments. Each state administers its own exam, though many now use the Uniform Bar Examination (UBE) for standardization.
