Job description

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY:
  • Exercise safe working practices at all times, demonstrating and complying with all company safety policies, including but not limited to personal protection equipment, following Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) procedures.
  • Clear bag jams and respond to trouble calls regarding the Baggage Handling System.
  • Maintain cleanliness of system, providing cleaning including but not limited to sweeping, housekeeping and collecting trash, cleaning dust and debris and general housekeeping of area around system.
  • Responsible for operations of Manual Encode Station
  • Monitor the manual encoding station to manually relocate bags that have been rerouted by the system due to size or other issues.
  • Respond in a timely manner to dispatched calls
  • Demonstrate good mechanical aptitude and comprehensive skills. Assist mechanical technical technicians as may be requested.
  • Monitor the BHS system and identify potential/developing mechanical concerns.
  • Follow instructions from control room operators, technicians and supervisors on maintenance needs.
  • Ensure baggage hygiene throughout BHS
  • Manage and measure customer expectations.
  • Comply with company safety program and trainings.
  • Ensure consistent leadership and direction for the site.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule
  • Perform other work related duties as requested or required

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of a Baggage Handler the employee is regularly required to sit; stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms. Work in a fast paced environment. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 90 pounds or more. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close proximity vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Good hand/eye coordination is required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The Baggage Handler is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, cleaning/maintenance chemicals, cold and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Employees may work on an airport ramp around airline vehicles and heavy equipment.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
  • High School Diploma
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Able to communicate in English fluently
  • Able to work flexible schedules including nights/holidays and weekends
  • Must be able to frequently and steadily lift baggage at 90 pounds or above
  • Must be self-motivated and willing to learn
  • Must be comfortable and capable of working safely around industrial equipment
  • Ability to be badged to work in secure areas of an airport
