Backup Architect information

What is a backup architect?

Backup Architects are IT professionals responsible for designing, implementing, and managing data backup and recovery solutions within an organization. They assess business needs and develop strategies to ensure that critical data is protected against loss, corruption, or disasters. Their role involves selecting appropriate backup technologies, creating policies for data retention, and regularly testing recovery procedures to guarantee data integrity and availability. Backup Architects also collaborate with other IT teams to integrate backup solutions with existing infrastructure and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a backup architect?

To thrive as a Backup Architect, you need expertise in data protection strategies, storage systems, and backup and recovery solutions, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Proficiency with tools such as Veeam, Commvault, Veritas NetBackup, and familiarity with cloud services like AWS or Azure is essential, along with relevant certifications (e.g., Veeam Certified Engineer, AWS Certified Solutions Architect). Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for designing robust backup solutions and collaborating with IT teams. These skills ensure data integrity, minimize downtime, and protect critical business information in complex IT environments.

What are some common challenges faced by backup architects when designing data protection solutions in large organizations?

Backup Architects often encounter challenges such as integrating legacy systems with modern backup technologies, ensuring scalability to handle growing data volumes, and maintaining compliance with data protection regulations. They must balance the need for fast recovery times with budget constraints and the practical limitations of network and storage infrastructure. Collaborating with cross-functional teams—such as IT security, database administrators, and business stakeholders—is essential to ensure solutions meet organizational needs while minimizing disruption.

  • Develop and maintain enterprise and system architecture recommendations spanning ESXi hosts, virtual machines/appliances, Red Hat OpenShift, VDI, Windows/Linux platforms, storage, applications, backup/recovery, and supporting infrastructure dependencies.
  • Perform system analysis and design and provide architecture guidance for establishing and sustaining virtual infrastructure and highly available enterprise services.
  • Architect scalable backup and recovery solutions compatible with Linux NFS, Windows SMB, the existing Enterprise SAN, Cohesity, Dell PowerProtect Data Manager, VMware Replication, and vSAN environments.
  • Define integration patterns for policy-driven protection and recovery services, including vProxy, DD Boost, NDMP, REST APIs, S3-compatible object storage, VMware vCenter/vSphere, and application-aware protection for platforms such as SQL Server.

  • Lead or support Business Impact Analysis, risk management, contingency planning, continuity planning, and disaster-recovery architecture recommendations across the enterprise.
  • Recommend high-availability and redundancy strategies appropriate to system impact levels, including load balancing, data mirroring, replication, and recovery/restoration approaches.
  • Support development, review, testing, and continuous improvement of contingency, business continuity, disaster recovery, and COOP reconstitution plans; document findings and recommendations in required technical products.
  • Ensure architecture recommendations align with applicable Army IM&T and cybersecurity standards and contingency guidance, including AR 25-1, AR 25-2, AR 500-3, and applicable NIST guidance.
Required Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of Army/DoD security, continuity, and system‑management requirements applicable to enterprise infrastructure.
  • SECRET security clearance.
Desired Qualifications
  • TOGAF, DoDAF, or comparable enterprise architecture experience or certification.
  • VMware VCP/VCAP, Red Hat, storage, or enterprise backup/recovery certifications.
  • Experience supporting Army/DoD continuity planning, Business Impact Analysis, disaster-recovery testing, and COOP reconstitution.
