Job Title: Backstage SME, Senior Engineer โ€“ Platform Engineering

Location: San Ramon, California (Remote)

Role Overview

We are seeking a Backstage SME, Senior Engineer to lead the design, implementation, and optimization of Internal Developer Platforms with deep expertise in Backstage and Harness. This role will focus on improving developer productivity, standardizing platform capabilities, and enabling self-service engineering workflows across teams.

Key Requirement

Strong design and hands-on implementation experience in building Internal Developer Platforms (IDP) using Backstage, with expert-level Backstage experience and expert-level Harness experience to improve developer productivity, service discovery, software templates, and platform automation. DevOps and CI/CD exposure are good-to-have skills.

Responsibilities:

IDP Architecture & Design

  • Lead the design and evolution of Internal Developer Platforms (IDP) centered on Backstage for self-service engineering workflows.
  • Define scalable Backstage architecture, platform standards, golden paths, and reusable templates for engineering teams.
  • Partner with platform, application, and engineering teams to align the developer portal with organizational platform goals and developer experience outcomes.

Backstage Implementation

  • Serve as the Backstage SME for platform engineering, owning architecture decisions, implementation patterns, and best practices.
  • Develop, customize, and optimize Backstage plugins, software templates, service catalog components, and TechDocs.
  • Design and implement Harness-based workflows and integrations at an expert level to support platform enablement, release orchestration, and self-service automation.
  • Integrate Backstage with engineering systems such as source control, platform services, observability tools, and deployment platforms as needed.

Platform Automation

  • Build and refine self-service workflows that enable developers to create services, manage templates, publish metadata, and consume platform capabilities through Backstage.
  • Use Harness expertise to enable standardized automation patterns and improve engineering workflow consistency.
  • Collaborate with adjacent teams on DevOps or CI/CD integrations where relevant, while keeping these skills as good to have rather than core role requirements.

Kubernetes & Platform Integration

  • Integrate Backstage with Kubernetes and cloud platform ecosystems where needed to provide visibility into services, environments, ownership, and platform health.
  • Ensure the developer portal presents meaningful engineering context across service metadata, documentation, platform components, and operational insights.
  • Support platform extensibility so teams can adopt additional DevOps or CI/CD capabilities over time as optional enhancements.

Developer Experience

  • Improve developer experience (DevEx) by simplifying onboarding, template adoption, documentation access, and platform discoverability through Backstage.
  • Drive adoption of standardized engineering workflows and service ownership practices across teams.
  • Act as a subject matter expert and mentor for Backstage platform capabilities, implementation patterns, and governance practices.

Required Experience

  • Hands-on 5+ years of experience implementing and scaling Backstage developer portals in production, with expert-level Backstage experience.
  • Proven experience designing and evolving Internal Developer Platforms (IDP) for engineering organizations.
  • Expert-level experience with Harness, including workflow design, platform enablement, and automation use cases.
  • Strong understanding of platform engineering and developer experience principles.
  • Exposure to DevOps practices and CI/CD tooling is a good-to-have.
