What is a Backend Full Stack Engineer?

A Backend Full Stack Engineer is a software developer who specializes in building and maintaining the server-side logic, databases, and APIs of an application, while also having proficiency in front-end technologies. They are capable of working on both the backend and frontend parts of web applications, allowing them to develop end-to-end features and ensure seamless integration between the client and server sides. This role requires strong knowledge of programming languages such as JavaScript (Node.js), Python, or Java, as well as familiarity with databases, server architectures, and various web frameworks. Backend Full Stack Engineers often collaborate with designers, frontend developers, and other stakeholders to deliver complete and functional products.

How does a Backend Full Stack Engineer typically collaborate with frontend developers and other team members?

Backend Full Stack Engineers frequently work alongside frontend developers, product managers, and QA engineers to deliver seamless user experiences. They are responsible for building and maintaining server-side logic and APIs, ensuring data flows efficiently between the backend and frontend. Effective communication is essential, as they must align backend functionality with frontend requirements and participate in code reviews, sprint planning, and troubleshooting sessions. This collaborative environment fosters learning and often provides opportunities to contribute across the tech stack, enhancing both technical and interpersonal skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Backend Full Stack Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Backend Full Stack Engineer, you need strong proficiency in server-side languages (such as Node.js, Python, or Java), database management, and a solid understanding of front-end technologies, usually supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with frameworks (like Express, Django, or Spring), version control systems (like Git), and cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure) is typically required. Effective problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills help you collaborate across disciplines and deliver robust solutions. These skills ensure scalable, maintainable applications and seamless integration between backend and frontend systems, which are critical for organizational success.

What is the difference between Backend Full Stack Engineer vs Frontend Developer?

AspectBackend Full Stack EngineerFrontend Developer

What You Will Do:

Guidehouse is seeking a Full Stack Engineer to support the design, development, testing, and deployment of a secure, AI-enabled analytic and decision-support platform for DoW, federal, and enterprise stakeholders. This role will help build the user-facing application, backend services, APIs, data integrations, dashboards, and workflow capabilities needed to move the solution from prototype to production.

The Full Stack Engineer will work closely with AI engineers, functional SMEs, architects, product managers, UX designers, and data teams to ensure the platform is intuitive, reliable, secure, and aligned to real operational workflows. This role is focused on delivering production-quality software that supports analyst productivity, transparent outputs, and secure integration with enterprise systems.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, test, and deploy full stack application capabilities for a secure analytic and decision-support platform.

  • Develop responsive, user-friendly web interfaces that support analyst workflows, scenario inputs, review steps, dashboard views, and report outputs.

  • Build backend services, APIs, and integration layers that connect the application to data sources, AI services, model outputs, and enterprise systems.

  • Support implementation of workflows for scenario management, assumptions management, review comments, approvals, audit trails, and user-facing validation logic.

  • Develop dashboards, visualizations, forms, and reporting views that present analytical outputs clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Integrate AI-enabled capabilities into the application experience, including model outputs, explanations, confidence indicators, citations, traceability, and human-in-the-loop review points.

  • Implement role-based access controls, authentication, authorization, data protections, and secure application patterns appropriate for DoW and federal environments.

  • Support data ingestion, transformation, and validation workflows in coordination with data engineers, AI engineers, and functional SMEs.

  • Build reusable front-end and back-end components that can support future enhancements and related Guidehouse delivery efforts.

  • Participate in system design, sprint planning, code reviews, testing, deployment readiness, and user acceptance activities.

  • Implement automated testing, CI/CD practices, documentation, logging, monitoring, and error handling to support production readiness.

  • Troubleshoot defects, performance issues, integration challenges, and user experience gaps across the full application stack.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to translate functional requirements into technical designs and working software.

What You Will Need:

  • An ACTIVE and MAINTAINED "SECRET" Federal or DoD securityclearance.

  • Bachelor's degree. Four (4) additional years of exp can be used in lieu of degree.

  • Must be a US citizen.

  • Five (5) years of experience in Full Stack development.

  • Experience designing, developing, testing, and deploying full stack web applications.

  • Strong software engineering fundamentals, including APIs, application architecture, data models, authentication, authorization, testing, and secure coding practices.

  • Experience with modern front-end frameworks such as React, Angular, Vue, or similar technologies.

  • Experience with backend development using Python, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, .NET, or similar languages and frameworks.

  • Experience building and integrating REST APIs, microservices, data services, or workflow services.

  • Familiarity with relational and/or NoSQL databases, data modeling, query development, and application data integration.

  • Experience developing dashboards, forms, visualizations, or user interfaces for analytical or operational workflows.

  • Experience working in cloud, containerized, or enterprise deployment environments using CI/CD, version control, automated testing, and DevSecOps practices.

  • Ability to work with product owners, functional SMEs, AI engineers, architects, and data teams to translate requirements into working software.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Comfort operating in regulated, audit-sensitive, federal, or DoW environments.

What Would Be Nice To Have:

  • Experience supporting DoW, federal, national security, or large enterprise technology modernization programs.

  • Experience developing applications in secure federal or DoW cloud environments.

  • Experience with Python, FastAPI, Node.js, React, TypeScript, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, Azure, AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or related technologies.

  • Experience integrating AI, machine learning, analytics, or decision-support capabilities into user-facing applications.

  • Familiarity with retrieval-augmented generation, model output review, human-in-the-loop workflows, explainability, traceability, or AI-enabled user experiences.

  • Experience implementing role-based access control, audit logging, data governance controls, information assurance requirements, or secure deployment patterns.

  • Experience building dashboards, reporting tools, scenario modeling interfaces, or workflow management applications.

  • Experience supporting demonstrations, pilots, prototypes, production releases, testing, and user acceptance with Government or enterprise stakeholders.

  • Familiarity with Section 508 accessibility, UX best practices, and design systems for federal applications.

  • Experience contributing reusable components, shared services, or reference architectures for enterprise software delivery.

The annual salary range for this position is $80,000.00-$133,000.00. Compensation decisions depend on a wide range of factors, including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, security clearances, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
