A Backcountry Caretaker is responsible for maintaining and protecting remote areas, such as wilderness cabins, trails, and campsites. They monitor environmental conditions, provide visitor assistance, and ensure compliance with conservation guidelines. Duties may include trail maintenance, managing waste, reporting hazards, and educating hikers on Leave No Trace principles. The job often requires living in isolated locations with minimal amenities for extended periods.
As a Backcountry Caretaker, your daily responsibilities often include monitoring trail and campsite conditions, maintaining shelters or facilities, managing visitor interactions, and promoting Leave No Trace principles. You may also need to perform light repairs, collect environmental data, and respond to minor emergencies or first aid situations. Much of the work is done independently and requires you to be comfortable in remote settings, though you may regularly communicate with park rangers or land managers. This role provides a unique opportunity to combine outdoor skills with conservation efforts, and you’ll play a key part in protecting natural resources for future visitors.
To thrive as a Backcountry Caretaker, you need experience in wilderness survival, land stewardship, basic maintenance, and first aid, often supported by certifications such as Wilderness First Responder (WFR) or Leave No Trace (LNT) training. Familiarity with GPS devices, satellite communication tools, hand tools, and trail maintenance equipment is typically required. Strong self-reliance, problem-solving, and clear communication skills help caretakers excel in isolated and sometimes unpredictable environments. These abilities are crucial for ensuring safety, resource protection, and effective stewardship of remote natural areas.

Founded in 1876, the Appalachian Mountain Club is the oldest conservation, education and recreation organization in the United States. The AMC promotes the protection, enjoyment, and wise use of the mountains, rivers and trails of the Appalachian region. The AMC encourages the involvement of all people in its mission and activities, through its membership, programs, policies, and procedures.
Caretakers are the AMC’s primary representatives in these off-grid backcountry facilities during the self-service seasons. To assure the best possible public service, they must be attentive to both the care of the guests and the maintenance of the hut. Basic expectations include friendly service, clean accommodations, and competent emergency assistance. Huts are connected to larger AMC support networks via radio.
The work schedule varies based on hut and is either week-on/week-off or 10 days on/4 days off for the duration of the season. Our caretakers work 56-70 hours per pay period (two weeks). The 2026-2027 seasons are late October-early February, early February-Memorial Day, or late April-Memorial Day, depending on hut and location. Please make clear in your application which season you are interested in working. Furter details and specifics will be discussed with applicants selected for interviews.
