Deerwood Country Club is pleased to announce an exceptional career opportunity for a 2nd Assistant Golf Course Superintendent!

This role is ideal for a motivated turf professional looking to grow within a high-performing team while contributing to the continued excellence of a premier private club.

The 2nd Assistant Superintendent supports the daily management of golf course maintenance operations, including turf care, irrigation systems, chemical applications, and team leadership. Working closely with the Superintendent, this position plays a key role in maintaining the course to the highest standards of conditioning and playability.

This opportunity is especially exciting as the Club prepares for a major golf course renovation beginning in Fall 2026. The project will include significant enhancements to the back nine, along with comprehensive infrastructure improvements such as irrigation, drainage, routing, and bunkering. The renovation will be led by Erik Larsen, former project architect for Arnold Palmer, ensuring a thoughtful and high-quality transformation. In addition, the Club will introduce a new 6-hole short course designed to elevate the overall golf experience.

Located in Jacksonville, Florida, Deerwood Country Club features a championship 18-hole course, expansive practice facilities, and a full suite of amenities including tennis, aquatics, and multiple dining venues. Job purpose

The 2nd Assistant Superintendent assists the Golf Course Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent in managing and overseeing the day-to-day maintenance and operations of the golf course areas. The role is responsible for supporting the upkeep of course conditions, assisting with supervising staff, and ensuring the highest standard of turf management and aesthetics. May serve as the GCS capacity during his absence.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Assists in overseeing the maintenance of greens, tees, fairways, and roughs to ensure optimal playing conditions.
  • Help manage irrigation systems, including programming and troubleshooting, to maintain appropriate turf moisture levels.
  • Support in implementing fertilization, pest control, and aeration programs as directed by the Superintendent. 
  • Assist in training maintenance staff, including equipment operations and greenskeepers.
  • Assist in the maintenance and repair of golf course equipment and machinery.
  • Help manage inventory and ordering of equipment parts and supplies. 
  • Ensure safety protocols and ensure that all safety equipment is used appropriately on the course.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and best practices in turf management.
  • Assist in the preparation and set up of the golf course for daily play, tournaments, and special events.
  • Help ensure that the course is presented in pristine condition, including bunker raking, debris removal, and tee marker placement. 
  • Support in the planning and execution of seasonal course enhancements and improvements.
  • Maintain effective communication with the Golf Course Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, and other team members.
  • Provide regular updates on course conditions, maintenance activities, and any issues affecting play.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
  • May require current state certification or licensing as a pesticide applicator.
  • Working knowledge of the maintenance of golf course tees, fairways and greens; seeding and maintenance practices for golf course turf; planting cultivating, pruning, and caring for shrubs and trees; characteristics and proper use of various fertilizer and soil conditioners; verbicides and pest control methods and materials, drainage control methods; irrigation systems, including wells, pumps and automatic controls.

Working conditions

Work is primarily outdoors with some indoor exposure.  Potential exposure to sharp and rapid equipment movement, sharp utensils, harmful chemicals and/or being exposed to flying golf balls.

Physical requirements

Good organizational and verbal skills. Ability to use logical and rational thinking to resolve issues. Ability to perform basic mathematical skills, monitors and develops subordinates, visually monitor the operation areas, write and read member communication.

Must have the ability to perform moderate physical work and may be required to lift up to 80 lbs., up to 50 lbs. frequently and up to 20 lbs. constantly. Perform activities such as bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing, reaching, standing, pushing, lifting and grasping for up to 5 hours without sitting.

Please be advised that all work that requires the use of a ladder more than 8 ft. long must be reviewed by Hampton Golf's Club Maintenance person. Following his assessment of the situation, he will determine if he or subcontractors will perform the necessary maintenance task. No other staff member is authorized to climb to heights exceeding 8 ft. and or perform such maintenance. In addition, personnel are prohibited from entering facility attics, walking on the roof of buildings, and/or prohibited from using scaffolding.

Use the following safety precautions when using an 8ft. ladder:

  • Correct placement of the ladder. The safest angle for a straight ladder is to ensure it is placed on-fourth the distance from the base to the point of support. "A" frame ladders naturally comply.
  • Ensure the ladder is placed on a firm level surface, and do not place the ladder near a doorway.
  • Ensure there are non-skid shoes on the ladder.
  • If using a medal ladder, be sure that it is not near electrical wires.
  • One person on a ladder at one time, and ensure another staff member is holding the ladder in position.
  • Never overreach.
  • Ability to consistently lift, carry and load adaptive and other sports equipment that may weigh 50 or more pounds, and sustain aerobic activity for 20 consecutive minutes
