JOB SUMMARY
The Department of Health Science and Human Ecology (HSCI) at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) invites applications for a tenure-track position "Open Rank" in Public Health, beginning in the 2026/2027 academic year.
The Department serves over 500 students across four undergraduate programs - Environmental Health Science, Health Services Administration, Nutritional Science and Dietetics, and Public Health-and three graduate programs-Master of Public Health, Master of Science in Health Services Administration, and Master of Science in Nutrition Science. Newly hired faculty will join a dynamic department of 9 tenure-line and over 15 adjunct faculty members.
This position specifically supports the undergraduate (BSPH) and graduate (MPH) programs in Public Health and help with development of the DrPH program. The successful candidate will teach in all programs and is expected to be familiar with the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) accreditation requirements and be willing to work with faculty in a collaborative effort to maintain accreditation. Also, the successful candidates for Associate/Full professor rank should show notable scientific contributions, shown by high quality and impactful peer-reviewed publications and a record of extramural funding. We seek candidates with expertise in Public Health who are enthusiastic about advancing our programs and leading the development of new public health initiatives. We are particularly seeking exceptional scholars whose teaching, research, and service are balanced and demonstrate a strong, integrated commitment to advancing knowledge, education, and community impact.
Further, the potential candidate is expected to teach and be familiar with the following course content: Advanced Epidemiology, Advanced Biostatistics, Research Methods, Program Planning and Evaluation, Infectious and Chronic Disease Epidemiology, Spatial Epidemiology, Advanced Topics in Health Promotion, Advanced Topics in Public Health Policy and Administration, Grant Writing for Health Sciences, and Advanced Topics in Professional Development and Leadership for Public Health. Further, the candidate is expected to supervise students on their graduate Theses, Projects, and Dissertations.
TYPICAL ACTIVITIES
Responsibilities include:
  • Teaching in both the undergraduate and graduate programs.
  • Leading and expanding public health initiatives within the department.
  • Supporting existing service-learning programs and developing community collaborations.
  • Promoting undergraduate and graduate-level scholarship and mentoring students in research.
  • Contributing to departmental, college, and university service activities.

This faculty position is a 100% in-person role, requiring all teaching, advising, and departmental responsibilities to be conducted on campus. The ideal candidate will be committed to academic excellence, scientific advancement, and professional practice in research, teaching, and service as aligned with the mission of CSUSB and the College of Natural Sciences. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Candidates must hold a PhD, DrPH, or equivalent degree in a field related to public or population health, epidemiology, or biostatistics, with a strong foundation in both qualitative and quantitative research methods.
  • Evidence of publication or relevant funding opportunities that showcase the applicant's potential for strong research, scholarly, and creative agenda in Public Health and be at the level to be appointed at the rank of an associate professor or professor.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Degree in hand by time of appointment.

Evidence of Teaching Effectiveness
  • Preference will be given to those with a specialty in Epidemiology and/or Biostatistics.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Must be able to chair and/or supervise graduate students' Thesis and Dissertation research projects.
  • Provide a list of classes taught on your CV that demonstrate potential for effective college-level teaching in areas related to Public Health. Evidence of this commitment should be supported by your Student Teaching Evaluations.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching and engagement within a multicultural academic environment that serves a diverse student body. Evidence of this commitment should be included in the Statement of Teaching Philosophy.
  • Commitment to service-learning, community-engaged learning, community-based participatory research, and/or action research. Evidence of this commitment should be provided in the Statement of Research Agenda.
  • Demonstrate potential to contribute to the growth and development of the Public Health program with a forward-thinking and innovative mindset.
  • Knowledge of CEPH requirements for public health programs, particularly those related to data collection, data analysis, community collaboration, and content delivery.
  • Candidates should also be willing to serve as Program Coordinator either in the undergraduate or graduate programs and contribute their expertise within this role.
  • Strong commitment to chairing dissertations, theses, and projects across graduate programs.
  • Deep interest and commitment to conducting collaborative research with diverse populations of inland Southern California is a preferred qualification.

Evidence of scholarly activity, publication, and innovation is valued. Evidence of exemplary graduate-level teaching and leadership experience at program level is preferred and should be noted in application.
