What is B2B content marketing?

B2B Content Marketing is a strategy where businesses create and share valuable, relevant content to attract and engage other businesses as customers. Instead of targeting individual consumers, B2B content marketing focuses on addressing the challenges, interests, and needs of other organizations. This often involves producing blog posts, whitepapers, case studies, webinars, and industry reports tailored for decision-makers. The goal is to build trust, nurture leads, and drive profitable business relationships through educational and informative content.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a B2B content marketer?

To thrive as a B2B Content Marketer, you need strong writing, research, and analytical skills, often supported by experience in digital marketing or a related field. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), marketing automation platforms, SEO tools, and analytics software is typically required. Creativity, strategic thinking, and the ability to collaborate cross-functionally are valuable soft skills for this role. These abilities ensure that content effectively engages target audiences, supports business goals, and drives measurable results in a competitive marketplace.

What are some common challenges faced by B2B content marketers when aligning content strategy with sales goals?

B2B content marketers often face the challenge of ensuring their content strategy effectively supports the sales team's objectives. This involves close collaboration with sales to understand buyer personas, pain points, and the sales funnel stages. Aligning content topics, formats, and distribution with sales needs requires ongoing communication and regular feedback loops. Additionally, measuring the direct impact of content on lead generation and conversion can be complex, necessitating the use of analytics and CRM tools to track performance and adjust strategies accordingly.

Job description

Are you a recognized thought leader and authority in the business-to-business (B2B) industrial ecommerce space - the world of manufacturers and distributors selling through dealer or distributor portals, websites, and channel networks? Do you understand the unique challenges B2B leaders face? Are you a passionate storyteller with experience bringing a content calendar to life in a world where AI search and LLMs are changing how online audiences engage with content?

Our team is seeking someone with recognised authority in the B2B ecommerce space, specifically within industrial and commercial sectors, who can help us expand our B2B thought leadership program. From definitive industry reports and technical deep-dives to blogs, executive video scripts, interactive content, and more, you'll help us create high-value, high-quality content for our audience of B2B ecommerce leaders. This role will own the content strategy, editorial direction, and authoritative road map for our B2B topic category, ensuring content offers a unique industry perspective while being search engine optimization (SEO) and answer engine optimization (AEO) optimized and collaborating closely with executive leadership to support high-impact marketing campaigns.

Please submit your resume, a short cover letter that touches on your unique expertise within the B2B ecommerce space, and two published B2B thought-leadership pieces.

How You'll Make an Impact:

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive B2B content calendar and strategy, designed to solidify our brand as the definitive authority in the space.
  • Support the advanced stages of the content marketing process - from predictive trend research and ideation to publication, promotion, measurement, and revenue-impact optimization.
  • Create elite, deeply researched thought-leadership content, including comprehensive whitepapers, trend reports, and strategic blogs that capture enterprise executive attention and drive high-quality pipeline.
  • Copy edit and refine core content assets to ensure flawless delivery that adheres to an advanced brand voice, tone, and rigorous editorial guidelines.
  • Write authoritative, high-conversion video scripts and multimedia narratives that translate complex enterprise ecommerce concepts into engaging, digestible content.
  • Structure and optimize all digital assets to ensure maximum visibility across traditional search engines (SEO) and emerging AI-driven answer engines and LLMs (AEO).
  • Conduct high-level interviews with internal and external C-suite executives and industry subject matter experts (SMEs) to extract proprietary insights, data, and market trends.
  • Track and report on content performance and attribution metrics, collaborating with marketing leadership to assess effectiveness, identify optimization opportunities, and ensure content initiatives meet strict key performance indicators (KPIs).

You'll Enjoy This Role If You Have:

  • Seven or more years of experience working as an industry journalist, senior content strategist, or a recognized thought leader specifically within the B2B ecommerce, distribution, or manufacturing domain.
  • Deep domain expertise in the mechanics of enterprise manufacturers and/or distributors with predominantly B2B selling models - how they go to market, and the role product data and ecommerce/digital transformation play in their growth.
  • Exceptinal writing abilities across premium long-form and short-form content types, demonstrating a proven track record of publishing content that shapes industry opinions and moves enterprise buyers.
  • Advanced, up-to-date knowledge of technical SEO and AEO frameworks, with a practical understanding of how to structure content to be cited by AI search models.
  • Strong research, fact-checking, executive interviewing, and data-analysis abilities, allowing you to build content based on proprietary market data.
  • Exceptional project management skills and strategic autonomy, with a proven ability to build a content road map from scratch and deliver premium assets on schedule with minimal oversight.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills, with experience working alongside executive stakeholders, as well as web, creative, marketing, and product teams.
  • Familiarity with the buying dynamics of dealer-, distributor-, and channel-led commerce and the industrial sectors we serve, such as:
    • Industrial supplies
    • Maintenance, Repair, and Operations (MRO)
    • Electrical
    • Building materials and construction supplies
    • Janitorial and sanitation
    • Safety
    • Chemical pharmaceuticals
    • Heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVACR)
    • Plumbing/pipe, valve, and fitting (PVF)

You'll get bonus points for bringing:

  • An existing personal brand, following, or frequent publication record within the enterprise technology or industrial distribution, B2B manufacturing, or MRO ecosystem.
  • Familiarity with the supporting technology - product information management (PIM) systems, enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, ecommerce platforms.
