Job description

Job Description
The Senior Database Administrator is responsible for the design, implementation, and optimization of enterprise database platforms, primarily across SQL Server and PostgreSQL, with responsibility for cloud-based solutions including Azure SQL Managed Instance and exposure to Cosmos DB. This role serves as a senior individual contributor and technical lead, owning database architecture, driving high availability and performance strategies, and leading continuous improvement across the data platform. The position partners closely with application, infrastructure, and cloud teams to ensure scalable, secure, and resilient database solutions.
Responsibilities
  • Design and implement high availability and disaster recovery (HA/DR) solutions across on-premises and cloud environments
  • Architect and support hybrid database platforms, including Azure SQL Managed Instance
  • Lead enterprise performance tuning efforts, including query optimization, indexing strategies, and workload analysis
  • Establish and enforce database standards, governance, security controls, and best practices
  • Own backup, recovery, and business continuity strategies aligned to defined RTO and RPO objectives
  • Plan and execute complex database migrations, upgrades, and cloud transformation initiatives
  • Troubleshoot and resolve advanced database performance, capacity, and replication issues
  • Provide Tier 3 support for critical incidents, including root cause analysis and long-term remediation
  • Lead database-related projects and contribute to broader enterprise architecture initiatives
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior and mid-level database administrators
  • Drive and improve ITIL-aligned processes, including:
    • Incident, Problem, Change, Capacity, and Availability Management
  • Ensure SLA compliance and lead continuous service improvement efforts
  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders, including:
    • Application and engineering teams
    • Infrastructure and network teams

Additional knowledge and skills:
  • Advanced expertise in SQL Server (administration, performance tuning, Always On, clustering, HA/DR)
  • Strong experience with PostgreSQL (administration, performance tuning, backup/recovery)
  • Experience designing and supporting Azure SQL Managed Instance environments (architecture, HA/DR, migrations)
  • Exposure to Cosmos DB, including data modeling, partitioning, and scaling concepts
  • Experience with enterprise backup and recovery strategies and tooling
  • Deep understanding of replication, clustering, and distributed database systems
  • Advanced performance tuning skills (execution plans, wait statistics, deadlock analysis)
  • Experience with monitoring and diagnostic tools across database platforms
  • Proficiency in automation and scripting (e.g., PowerShell or equivalent)
  • Experience with SQL Server linked servers, distributed queries, and cross-platform data integration patterns
  • Familiarity with Azure monitoring tools (Azure Monitor, Log Analytics) and cloud operations
  • Exposure to cloud migrations and hybrid architectures
  • Experience with other database platforms (e.g., Oracle, including RMAN) is a plus
  • Familiarity with complementary technologies such as Azure Cache for Redis is a plus

Qualifications
  • 5+ years of database administration experience in enterprise, production environments
  • Proven experience designing and supporting highly available, scalable database systems
  • Experience leading technical initiatives and mentoring team members
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field (preferred)
