Job description

Lead Software Engineer Location: Reston, VA (Hybrid) Duration: Contract through end of year (extension possible) Candidates must reside in the DMV area.

Overview

We are seeking a Senior Java Backend Developer to support a major AWS cloud migration initiative. This role is ideal for an experienced engineer with deep expertise in Java, Spring Framework, Microservices, AWS Migration, and enterprise-level backend development. The selected candidate will play a key role in designing, developing, and modernizing large-scale applications while mentoring junior engineers and collaborating with cross-functional teams.

Required Qualifications

  • 12+ years of hands-on experience in Java development
  • 8+ years of software design, development, and systems integration experience
  • 3+ years of AWS cloud migration experience (required)
  • Strong expertise with:
    • Java
    • Spring Framework / Spring Boot
    • Spring Batch
    • Microservices architecture
    • IBM MQ
  • Extensive database experience with:
    • SQL
    • Oracle
    • MongoDB
    • PostgreSQL
  • Experience integrating and supporting legacy/web services
  • Strong understanding of SDLC, Agile methodologies, CI/CD, DevSecOps, and automated testing
  • Experience leading technical initiatives and mentoring developers
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience)

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, testing, and deployment of enterprise applications
  • Drive AWS cloud migration efforts and modernization initiatives
  • Design scalable backend services and microservices architectures
  • Collaborate with Architects, Product Owners, Scrum Masters, and stakeholders to define technical solutions

  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership across project teams
