Certified Security Technician

Position Overview

The Certified Security Technician will install, inspect, test, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair physical access control and video surveillance hardware and software at Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory.

The technician will support RS2 AccessIT, HID PIV Class, Avigilon, and EasyLobby environments, along with card readers, PIV readers, request-to-exit devices, door controllers, interface panels, lock power supplies, batteries, cameras, video servers, storage equipment, network switches, workstations, and monitoring consoles.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform scheduled preventive maintenance and inspections of PACS and VASS equipment.
• Troubleshoot, repair, test, and restore malfunctioning access-control and video surveillance equipment.
• Inspect and test card readers, PIV readers, request-to-exit devices, door contacts, controllers, interface panels, power supplies, locks, and backup batteries.
• Inspect and maintain indoor and outdoor cameras, PTZ cameras, recording servers, network switches, storage arrays, and environmental enclosures.
• Support RS2 AccessIT, HID PIV Class, Avigilon, and EasyLobby hardware and software.
• Diagnose communication, power, wiring, device, controller, camera, recording, and network-related failures.
• Replace defective field devices, boards, batteries, cameras, power supplies, and related components.
• Perform system testing after maintenance or repair to verify complete restoration.
• Assist with software upgrades, firmware updates, configuration changes, and system commissioning.
• Conduct preventive maintenance without causing unnecessary access-control outages or loss of active camera recording.
• Respond to non-emergency service requests and arrive on-site within the required response period.
• Participate in a rotating emergency-support schedule and respond to urgent system failures.
• Maintain accurate service tickets, inspection forms, equipment records, test results, parts usage, and corrective-maintenance documentation.
• Escalate complex server, database, software, integration, or network issues to the Senior Systems Engineer.
• Coordinate work with facility security, technical, safety, and contract personnel.
• Follow lockout/tagout, electrical safety, ladder safety, protective equipment, and site-specific work-control procedures.
• Provide guidance and direct supervision to Apprentice/Helpers assigned to field work.

Qualifications/Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Associate degree, technical diploma, registered apprenticeship, or vocational training in electronics, electrical systems, information technology, low-voltage systems, or a related field is preferred.
• Recommended minimum of three years of experience installing or maintaining electronic security systems.
• Hands-on experience with enterprise access-control or video surveillance systems.
• Experience troubleshooting low-voltage electrical, communication, network, camera, and controller problems.
• Experience working with card readers, door hardware interfaces, power supplies, control panels, network cameras, and video recording equipment.
• Experience working in federal, industrial, research, academic, or other high-security environments is preferred.
• Must be able to interpret wiring diagrams, installation drawings, device schedules, technical manuals, and system documentation.
• Must be able to use electronic test equipment, hand tools, power tools, ladders, and manufacturer diagnostic applications safely.

Certification

Current manufacturer certifications should include, as applicable:

• RS2 AccessIT certification
• Avigilon certification
• HID certification or HID PIV Class product training
• EasyLobby certification or product training

Additional preferred certifications include:

• OSHA 10 or OSHA 30
• Low-voltage electrical or electronic security license, where applicable
• Network or structured-cabling certification
• CPR/First Aid
• Lift or ladder safety training, when required for assigned work

Clearance/Security

• Must be eligible for access to a secured Department of Energy national laboratory.
• Must possess a valid, unexpired REAL ID-compliant credential or passport.
• Non-U.S. citizens require advance administrative review and approval.
• Personnel exceeding 40 hours of on-site service must complete required General Employee Training.
• Untrained or unauthorized personnel may require an approved escort until all access requirements are completed.

Place of Performance and Availability

• Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, Princeton, New Jersey
• On-site position
• Standard support hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time
• Non-emergency on-site response required within 24 hours
• Emergency on-site response required within four hours, 24/7/365
• Must be locally deployable through an office or dispatch center within 100 miles of the facility.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift and carry tools, equipment, batteries, cameras, and replacement components.
• Ability to work from ladders and in equipment, server, electrical, and communications rooms.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, climb, and work in indoor and outdoor environments.
• Ability to perform work around doors, ceilings, walls, security enclosures, and equipment cabinets.
• Ability to respond to urgent service calls outside regular business hours.
