Automotive Systems Engineer - Controls
Job Overview / Summary
We are seeking a highly technical Systems Engineer to lead the definition, architecture, and development of next-generation vehicle features from concept through production. This role focuses on early-stage systems engineering and feature development rather than primarily software testing or validation.
The position will translate customer and business needs into system requirements, functional specifications, logical architectures, and software implementation requirements while working across software, electrical, mechanical, and vehicle integration teams.
This is a hybrid position requiring four days per week in the office, Monday through Thursday, in Dearborn, MI.
Key Responsibilities
  • Develop system architectures and define vehicle feature behavior.
  • Write engineering requirements, functional specifications, and implementation specifications.
  • Create System Boundary Diagrams, DFMEAs, and other engineering quality documentation.
  • Develop verification plans and support functional safety and cybersecurity assessments.
  • Support software implementation through detailed functional specifications.
  • Apply Model-Based Systems Engineering methodologies to feature development.
  • Work across software, electrical, mechanical, and vehicle integration teams.
  • Collaborate across multiple engineering organizations to resolve complex technical issues.
  • Lead cross-functional engineering decisions and technical trade-off discussions.
  • Guide vehicle features from concept through production launch.
  • Support progression of customer use cases through architecture, design, development, testing, and production integration.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 3 years of Automotive Systems Engineering experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of Software Engineering experience supporting complex embedded systems.
  • Experience writing engineering requirements, functional specifications, and implementation specifications.
  • Experience creating DFMEAs, System Boundary Diagrams, and other engineering quality documentation.
  • Strong understanding of the Systems Engineering V-Model.
  • Experience developing vehicle features from concept through production.
  • Strong understanding of vehicle electrical systems, including networking, wiring, power distribution, body systems, chassis systems, and CAN communication.
  • Experience collaborating across multiple engineering organizations to resolve complex technical issues.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of Automotive Systems Engineering experience.
  • Experience leading complete feature development throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Experience developing logical system architectures using Model-Based Systems Engineering tools.
  • Experience performing Functional Safety and Cybersecurity assessments.
  • Experience supporting software implementation through detailed functional specifications.
  • Electrical D&R experience.
  • Strong systems thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience leading multi-functional engineering teams and technical trade-off discussions.
  • Experience progressing customer use cases through architecture, design, development, testing, and production integration.
