Remote Automotive Systems Engineer information

What is a remote automotive systems engineer?

Remote Automotive Systems Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and test automotive systemsβ€”such as safety, infotainment, or powertrain controlsβ€”while working remotely. They use specialized software tools to collaborate with teams, troubleshoot system issues, and ensure components meet automotive standards and regulations. Their work often involves simulation, system integration, and validating designs through virtual or remote testing methods. This role requires strong knowledge of automotive engineering, electronics, and remote communication technologies.

How does a remote automotive systems engineer collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams while working off-site?

As a Remote Automotive Systems Engineer, collaboration with cross-functional teamsβ€”such as software developers, hardware engineers, and project managersβ€”is typically facilitated through digital communication tools like video conferencing, project management software, and shared documentation platforms. Regular virtual meetings and clear communication protocols help ensure alignment on project goals and timelines. Additionally, cloud-based simulation and testing environments allow remote engineers to review system designs, run diagnostics, and share results in real time, fostering seamless teamwork despite geographic distance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote automotive systems engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Automotive Systems Engineer, you need strong expertise in automotive electronics, systems integration, and a relevant engineering degree such as electrical or mechanical engineering. Experience with tools like MATLAB/Simulink, CAN bus analysis, and familiarity with ISO 26262 or ASPICE certifications is highly valuable. Excellent problem-solving, remote collaboration, and clear communication skills help you work effectively with global teams and stakeholders. These skills ensure the design and delivery of safe, reliable automotive systems that meet rigorous industry standards, even in a distributed work environment.

What is the difference between Remote Automotive Systems Engineer vs Remote Automotive Software Developer?

AspectRemote Automotive Systems EngineerRemote Automotive Software Developer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, Systems or Electrical Engineering, relevant certificationsBachelor's in Computer Science, Software Engineering, coding certifications
Work EnvironmentDesigning and integrating vehicle systems, collaborating with hardware teamsWriting, testing, and maintaining automotive software applications
Industry UsageUsed in vehicle design, system integration, and testingUsed in software development for vehicle control, infotainment, and ECU programming
Common Search/ComparisonOften compared for technical scope and responsibilitiesRelated but focuses more on coding and software implementation

The Remote Automotive Systems Engineer primarily focuses on designing and integrating vehicle systems, requiring engineering credentials and hardware collaboration. In contrast, the Remote Automotive Software Developer concentrates on coding and software development for automotive applications. Both roles are essential in the automotive industry but differ in their core responsibilities and skill sets.

About the role

Join theΒ Arene Applied EngineeringΒ team as a contingent Systems Engineer. You'll collaborate with systems engineering, product, and global partners to design and implement software solutions for a service platform (Tools & SDK), ensuring reliability, scalability, and performance.Β This is a client-facing role - excellent communication is essential.Β This is aΒ software systems engineeringΒ role (not an embedded-firmware-only position).

What you'll do
  • Design and implement software solutions for a service platform (Tools & SDK).
  • Develop, integrate, and maintain system-level software components for real-time and Linux-based automotive systems.
  • Implement and enhance middleware, inter-process communication frameworks, and scheduling systems for hardware-agnostic, update-friendly vehicle services.
  • Drive system design specifications - including state machines and sequence diagrams - and create testable system requirements.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex software and system-level issues with quality and integration engineers.

Requirements

Minimum qualifications
  • Experience creating detailed system- and software-level requirements for complex products.
  • MBSE experience with CATIA and StrictDoc (required)Β for documenting system/software architectures usingΒ SysML and UML.
  • Experience with safety-critical / fault-tolerant automotive software (ISO 26262, AUTOSAR).
  • Strong understanding of vehicle networking - ADAS and cockpit architecture, ECU architecture, and validation of distributed vehicle software features.
  • Strong Python and C++ (heavy emphasis on Python).
  • Exposure to cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), containerization, and DevOps tooling.
  • Proficiency with modern build systems and CI/CD (e.g.,Β Bazel, GitHub/GitLab).
Preferred qualifications
  • Experience leading software projects and/or small teams.
  • Embedded software experience in robotics, automotive, or related industries.
  • Experience creating test, verification, or validation plans and methodologies.
