Automotive Software Engineer information

What are some common challenges automotive software engineers face when integrating software with vehicle hardware?

Automotive Software Engineers often encounter challenges related to ensuring seamless communication between software systems and a variety of vehicle hardware components, such as sensors and electronic control units (ECUs). This requires a deep understanding of embedded systems, real-time processing, and rigorous testing to meet industry safety and reliability standards. Additionally, engineers must adapt to rapidly evolving automotive technologies and maintain compliance with strict regulatory requirements. Collaboration with hardware engineers and cross-functional teams is essential to address these challenges efficiently.

What is an automotive software engineer?

An automotive software engineer is responsible for the design and development of software systems used in car technology. These solutions may be used to control various environmental systems of a car, such as its wheels for automatic parking. As an automotive software engineer, your job duties include designing software solutions, programming software, and troubleshooting bugs. The career typically requires a bachelor’s in engineering, although some employers may prefer a master’s degree. You also need experience with software or system development in the automotive field, as well as an understanding of software design methods, operating systems, and programming languages. Additional qualifications include excellent technical skills and analytical problem-solving ability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an automotive software engineer?

To thrive as an Automotive Software Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, embedded systems, and automotive-specific protocols, usually supported by a relevant degree. Proficiency with programming languages like C/C++, MATLAB/Simulink, and experience using automotive tools such as CAN, AUTOSAR, and diagnostic systems is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork distinguish top performers in this role. These capabilities are crucial for developing reliable, safe, and innovative automotive software in a highly regulated and technologically advanced industry.

Job description

Build the Software That Accelerates Vehicle Development

Hypercraft is developing a new generation of electric Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs) for defense and commercial applications.

Supporting those vehicles is Carbon, Hypercraft's Software Defined Vehicle ecosystem.

Carbon is the engineering platform behind every Hypercraft vehicle. It provides the tools, services, deployment infrastructure, diagnostics, and application framework that allow vehicles to be configured, monitored, updated, and continuously improved throughout their lifecycle.

We're looking for an experienced software engineer to help build the platform that engineers, operators, and customers use every day.

About the Role

We're looking for a software engineer who enjoys building products rather than business applications.

You'll help develop Carbon, the engineering platform that enables faster vehicle development, simpler deployment, better diagnostics, and easier integration across the Hypercraft ecosystem.

You'll work closely with embedded, electrical, mechanical, controls, manufacturing, and mission engineering teams to develop software that directly supports real vehicles operating in demanding environments.

What You'll Build
  • Carbon desktop, web, and edge applications
  • Vehicle configuration, deployment, and management tools
  • Fleet management, diagnostics, and logging systems
  • Platform services, APIs, and developer tooling
  • Software that powers engineering workflows across every Hypercraft vehicle
Responsibilities
  • Design and develop desktop, web, and edge applications that support vehicle development, deployment, and operations.
  • Build platform services, APIs, and tools for vehicle configuration, diagnostics, logging, fleet management, and software deployment.
  • Develop software that runs both on engineering workstations and on embedded Linux vehicle platforms.
  • Improve software architecture, developer workflows, deployment pipelines, and engineering productivity.
  • Support prototype development, field testing, and customer deployments.
  • Collaborate with embedded, controls, electrical, mechanical, and mission engineering teams to build tools that enable the entire vehicle platform.
What We're Looking ForMinimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related discipline
  • 8+ years developing production software
  • Strong object-oriented programming skills
  • Experience designing software architecture
  • Strong debugging and problem-solving skills
  • Experience working across multidisciplinary engineering teams
Experience in Several of These Areas
  • Rust
  • TypeScript
  • React
  • Python
  • Go
  • PostgreSQL
  • Docker
  • REST APIs
  • Protobuf /gRPC
  • Distributed systems
  • Linux
  • CI/CD
  • Cloud platforms

No candidate is expected to have experience in every area.

Backgrounds That Translate Well

Experience in one or more of the following industries is particularly relevant:

  • Engineering software
  • Robotics
  • Automotive
  • Industrial automation
  • Defense
  • Developer platforms
  • Fleet management
  • Cloud platforms

You'll Probably Enjoy This Role If...
  • You enjoy building software platforms.
  • You like simplifying complex engineering workflows.
  • You think about software architecture.
  • You enjoy building products that other engineers depend on.
  • You like working closely with hardware engineers.
  • You care about usability just as much as technical implementation.
Why Hypercraft

Most software engineers build internal tools or business applications.

At Hypercraft, you'll build software that directly supports vehicle development.

Every improvement you make helps engineers build vehicles faster, integrate new capabilities more easily, and deploy software more reliably.

You'll see your work used every day by the people building the next generation of Hypercraft vehicles.

Benefits
  • Competitive compensation
  • Equity opportunities
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401k
  • Unlimited paid time off
  • Professional development
  • Relocation assistance may be available
