Freelance Embedded Software Engineer information

What is a freelance embedded software engineer?

A Freelance Embedded Software Engineer is a professional who designs, develops, tests, and maintains software that operates on embedded systems, such as microcontrollers and specialized hardware, while working independently or on a contract basis. Unlike full-time employees, freelancers typically work with multiple clients on a project-by-project basis. Their responsibilities often include writing firmware, optimizing code for hardware constraints, and integrating software with electronic components. Freelancers in this field enjoy flexibility and variety in their work, but are also responsible for managing their own business operations.

What are some common challenges freelance embedded software engineers face when working with multiple clients?

Freelance embedded software engineers often juggle several projects simultaneously, each with unique hardware platforms, toolchains, and client expectations. Managing communication across different time zones and ensuring clear documentation for handoffs can be challenging. Additionally, freelancers must quickly adapt to varying development environments and maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry standards to deliver quality solutions. Effective organization and transparent project management are key to overcoming these hurdles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance embedded software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Embedded Software Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science or electrical engineering, proficiency in embedded C/C++, and experience with microcontrollers or real-time operating systems. Familiarity with development tools such as Keil, IAR, or Eclipse, version control systems like Git, and relevant certifications (e.g., ARM Accredited Engineer) are highly valued. Excellent problem-solving skills, self-motivation, and strong communication are crucial for managing diverse client projects and remote collaborations. These skills ensure you can deliver reliable, efficient solutions tailored to client needs while maintaining professional autonomy and quality standards.

What is the difference between Freelance Embedded Software Engineer vs Embedded Software Developer?

AspectFreelance Embedded Software EngineerEmbedded Software Developer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in computer engineering or related field, with certifications like ARM or RTOS expertiseSimilar credentials, often with certifications in embedded systems or specific platforms
Work EnvironmentIndependent, project-based, often remote or client-siteUsually employed by companies, working in teams within offices or labs
Industry UsageFreelance market for custom projects, consulting, or short-term contractsFull-time or contract roles within tech, automotive, medical, or consumer electronics industries

While both roles require embedded systems knowledge and similar credentials, a Freelance Embedded Software Engineer works independently on diverse projects, often remotely, whereas an Embedded Software Developer is typically employed by a company, working within a team on ongoing product development.

Job description

Description

Location: On-site in Salt Lake City, Utah

Build the embedded software that helps robotic systems operate reliably in complex, real-world environments. Palladyne AI (NASDAQ: PDYN) is seeking to hire an Embedded Software Engineer to develop Linux-based software in modern C++ and solve system-level performance and integration challenges for robotic systems.ย

You'll contribute across the software lifecycle from object-oriented design and implementation through testing and deployment. Your work will involve multithreaded systems, interprocess communication, real-time constraints, and software that must perform reliably as part of standalone robotic systems deployed to customer sites.ย

Palladyne AI is a U.S.-based defense and industrial technology company that delivers embodied AI-powered collaborative autonomy solutions, advanced avionics, precision-manufactured components, UAVs, and advanced aerospace design services.ย

This role is a strong fit for someone who enjoys working close to the system level, debugging challenging software behavior, and collaborating with other engineers to build reliable embedded software for robotic systems deployed in real-world environments.ย

What You'll Doย

  • Develop embedded software for Linux-based robotic systems using modern C++.ย
  • Build software that meets performance, security, reliability, and real-time requirements.ย
  • Develop software that communicates with other components through interprocess communication, internet protocols, and embedded systems protocols.ย
  • Work with modern C++ concepts and system-level functionality, including smart pointers, threads, containers, UNIX system calls, processes, file systems, and database connections.ย
  • Design and document object-oriented software and create test plans that support high-quality, maintainable code.ย
  • Develop multithreaded and interprocess software that can complete goals within defined time constraints.ย
  • Diagnose and optimize system-level performance to support reliable operation on embedded robotic platforms.ย
  • Participate in the team's agile software development process and collaborate across engineering disciplines throughout development and integration.ย
  • Develop software for standalone systems that will be deployed to customer sites.ย

What Makes Someone Successful Hereย

  • You enjoy understanding how software components, operating systems, and robotic systems work together.ย
  • You approach complex technical problems methodically and are comfortable debugging at the system level.ย
  • You care about writing clear, maintainable, well-documented code.ย
  • You consider performance, timing, security, and reliability as part of how you design software.ย
  • You communicate technical ideas clearly and collaborate effectively with other engineers.ย
  • You take ownership of your work while knowing when to bring in teammates to solve broader system challenges.ย
  • You are curious and adaptable when working through unfamiliar technical problems.ย
  • You maintain strong safety awareness when working with physical robotic systems.ย

Requirements

  • 5+ years of relevant experience.ย
  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited university in computer science, software engineering, computer engineering, or electrical engineering.ย
  • Strong proficiency in modern C++, including multithreading, smart pointers, containers, UNIX system calls, processes, file systems, and database connectivity.ย
  • Experience with system-level programming and optimizing performance of systems.ย
  • Experience managing software projects with Git.ย
  • Experience with multithreaded programming, interprocess communication, and UNIX-style processes.ย

Preferred Qualificationsย
