Automation Intern information

What does an Automation Intern do?

An Automation Intern assists engineering or IT teams by helping design, develop, and maintain automated systems and processes. Their responsibilities often include writing scripts, testing automation tools, gathering and analyzing data, and supporting ongoing automation projects. This role provides valuable hands-on experience with modern automation technologies and often involves collaboration with experienced engineers or developers to improve efficiency within an organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Automation Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Automation Intern, you should have a foundational understanding of programming, process automation concepts, and a relevant academic background such as engineering or computer science. Familiarity with automation tools like PLCs, Python, or RPA platforms, as well as version control systems like Git, is often required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong communication skills help interns contribute effectively to team projects and problem-solving tasks. These skills ensure that you can learn quickly, troubleshoot efficiently, and support successful automation initiatives in a dynamic work environment.

Is $20 an hour good for an intern?

For an automation intern, $20 an hour is generally considered above average for internship pay, which often ranges from minimum wage to around $15 per hour depending on location and industry. Interns gaining experience with automation tools and programming languages like Python or R may find this rate competitive, especially if the role offers valuable skills and mentorship. However, pay standards vary by region and company size, so it's important to compare with local internship rates and consider the overall benefits package.

What are the big 4 internships?

The Big 4 internships typically refer to internship programs at Deloitte, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), Ernst & Young (EY), and KPMG. These firms offer internships in areas such as audit, consulting, tax, and advisory, providing valuable experience and potential pathways to full-time roles in accounting and professional services.

Is 22 too old for an internship?

Automation internships are open to candidates of various ages, including 22. Age is generally not a barrier, and employers often value skills, relevant experience, and enthusiasm over age when considering applicants for internships.

What is the difference between Automation Intern vs Automation Engineer?

The internship serves as a stepping stone toward a full engineering role in the automation industry.

Is 23 dollars an hour good for an internship?

For an automation intern, $23 an hour is generally considered above average for internships, which often pay between minimum wage and $20 per hour depending on location and industry. This rate reflects the technical skills and knowledge required for automation tasks, such as scripting or using automation tools. However, the value of the pay also depends on the cost of living and the internship's responsibilities.

What types of projects and responsibilities can an Automation Intern expect during their internship?

As an Automation Intern, you can expect to work on projects that involve designing, testing, and implementing automated processes under the supervision of experienced engineers. Typical responsibilities may include assisting with scripting, configuring automation tools, performing quality checks, and documenting workflows. You'll likely collaborate with cross-functional teams such as IT, operations, and development to help streamline business processes and improve efficiency. This hands-on experience can provide valuable exposure to industry-standard tools and methodologies, setting a strong foundation for a future career in automation or related fields.

Job description

AI Automation Internย

Founding AI Team Reporting Directly to Partnerย

If you want to move fast, ship real things, and haveย outsizedย impactย atย a leading PE firmโ€”keep reading.ย

ย

Position Summary:ย

K1 is seeking an AI Automation Intern to join our founding AI team in Manhattan Beach, CA.ย This is not a typical internship. You will be one of three founding members of K1's internal AI function,ย reporting directly to a Founding Partnerย with no middle management, noย busywork, and real ownership from day one. You will work at the intersection of artificial intelligence, enterprise software, and private equity operations โ€” shipping real automations, building real tools, and driving real impact across a portfolio of 275+ companies. Top performers will convert to full-time roles with a mandate to build and lead their own team. The right candidate will embody the values of K1 โ€“ Passion, Persistence, Humility, and Excellence.ย

Key Responsibilities:ย

  • Designing, building, and deploying AI-powered automations using Claude, Microsoft 365 (Power Automate, Copilot, SharePoint), and custom integrations toย eliminateย manual processes across the firm and portfolioย companies;ย

  • Rapidly prototyping AI tools and agents โ€” from competitive intelligence scrapers to board-report generators โ€” and iterating quickly based on real userย feedback;ย

  • Evaluating emerging AI models, tools, and frameworks and synthesizing findings into actionable recommendations for the investmentย team;ย

  • Building internal dashboards, data pipelines, and agentic workflows that give K1's investment professionals an unfairย advantage;ย

  • Performing other duties as assigned.ย

Requirements:ย

  • Open to May 2026 graduates (including out-of-state candidates willing to relocate) and 2027โ€“2028 graduates based in the Los Angeles area.
  • Currentlyย pursuing a Bachelor's orย Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Business + CS, or a relatedย field;ย
  • At least one prior internship or substantive project experience in AI/ML, software engineering, or dataย science;ย

  • Proficiencyย with Claude (Anthropic) as a daily working tool โ€” prompt engineering, multi-step workflows, and integration into realย tasks;ย

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft 365 (Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams); familiarity with Power Automate or Copilot Studio is aย plus;ย

  • Proficiencyย in Python and/or JavaScript โ€” youย don'tย need to be a systems engineer, but you need to be able to ship workingย code;ย
  • Bias toward action, comfort with ambiguity, and a genuine obsession with where AI isย headed;
  • Ability to work in-office in Manhattan Beach 2โ€“3 days per week.ย
    ย

Perks:ย

  • Direct access to a Founding Partner โ€” no layers, no bureaucracyย

  • Full-time conversion opportunity with an accelerated path to building your own teamย

  • Portfolio-wide exposure across 275+ enterprise software companiesย

  • Flexible scheduling around your class scheduleย

  • Competitive hourly compensationย
    ย
