What is an automation architect?

An Automation Architect is a professional responsible for designing, implementing, and managing automation solutions within an organization. They evaluate business processes and technical requirements to create scalable and efficient automation frameworks, often using tools like RPA (Robotic Process Automation), CI/CD pipelines, or cloud automation. Automation Architects collaborate with IT teams, developers, and business stakeholders to ensure automation aligns with organizational goals and integrates seamlessly with existing systems. Their expertise helps organizations improve efficiency, reduce manual work, and optimize operational workflows.

What does an automation architect do?

As an automation architect, you work with leadership and stakeholders throughout an organization to design and develop approaches to automating business processes. This role is similar to that of a software solutions architect but does not necessarily involve a particular framework or technology. Instead, your responsibilities and duties involve assessing current business processes, making a case for or against automating a given process, and designing an architecture to achieve identified goals. Often, the drive to automate processes stems from a desire to reduce costs, improve accuracy, streamline workflows throughout the organization, and enhance customer experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an automation architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Automation Architect, you need a strong background in computer science, software development, and automation frameworks, often supported by a relevant degree and experience in designing scalable automation solutions. Familiarity with tools like Selenium, Jenkins, Ansible, and certifications such as Certified Automation Professional (CAP) or AWS Certified Solutions Architect are highly valued. Outstanding problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and the capacity to lead cross-functional teams set top performers apart. These skills ensure efficient implementation of automation strategies that drive productivity, reduce errors, and align with business goals.

What are some common challenges automation architects face when implementing automation solutions across multiple teams?

Automation Architects often encounter challenges such as aligning diverse team requirements, managing legacy systems, and ensuring scalability of automation frameworks. Coordinating with multiple stakeholders requires strong communication and change management skills, as different teams may have varying levels of automation maturity. Additionally, balancing the need for standardized processes with the flexibility to address unique project needs is a key aspect of the role. Overcoming these challenges usually involves regular cross-team meetings, thorough documentation, and establishing clear automation guidelines.

What is the difference between Automation Architect vs Automation Engineer?

AspectAutomation ArchitectAutomation Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor’s degree in computer science or engineering, with certifications like Certified Automation Professional (CAP)Usually holds a degree in computer science or related field, with similar certifications often preferred

Job description

Job Overview

Pay Range $70hr - $90hr

Responsibilities:

  • Analyze, design, develop, and deploy end-to-end automation solutions with a strong emphasis on business value, cost savings, and operational efficiency across the investment workflows.
  • Serve as the primary technical owner for production automation stability — proactively monitoring, triaging, and resolving incidents to maintain zero-defect delivery posture across all live bots.
  • Evaluate automation requests and emerging AI capabilities (including LLM agents and agentic frameworks) to determine the optimal solution approach — knowing when RPA, AI, or a hybrid model is the right fit.
  • Build and maintain React-based front-end interfaces that surface automation outputs, operational dashboards, and AI-powered workflow tools for business users and stakeholders.
  • Integrate LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Azure OpenAI) and AI-native patterns — including RAG pipelines, function calling, and streaming interfaces — into automation and operational tooling where applicable.
  • Collaborate with the Product Owner during PI planning and sprint ceremonies to translate business requirements into well-scoped, deliverable automation epics and user stories.
  • Partner with business units to gather requirements, assess automation opportunities, and design workflows that meet each team's operational and regulatory needs.
  • Document automation architecture, design decisions, and process flows using Arc42 or equivalent frameworks to ensure maintainability and knowledge continuity.
  • Provide technical mentorship to junior and mid-level engineers on the squad, establishing code quality standards, review practices, and AI integration patterns.
  • Support the evaluation and adoption of emerging automation and AI tooling — including UiPath Autopilot, Agentic workflow frameworks, and Snowflake-integrated data pipelines.
  • Act as a liaison and represent automation capabilities and interests when interacting and collaborating with Intelligent Automation teams across the enterprise.
  • Qualifications
  • Production-level RPA design and delivery; UiPath certifications preferred (UiARD or equivalent).
  • React 18+, TypeScript, component architecture, integration with REST/API backends.
  • Candidate must be fully available for core EST business hours and sprint/PI ceremonies.
  • Process assessment, ROI/cost-saving analysis, solution design, and implementation planning.
  • Monitoring, incident triage, root cause analysis, and remediation of live automation environments.
  • Hands-on experience with OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, or Anthropic APIs; RAG pipelines, function calling, streaming UX patterns.
  • Active participation in PI planning, sprint ceremonies, and backlog refinement; Jira proficiency.
  • Prior work in financial services, healthcare, or other regulated environments preferred.
  • Data querying, pipeline integration, and analytics workflows using Snowflake.
  • Workflow configuration, API integration, or administration experience with ServiceNow / Salesforce.
  • Scripting and custom component development within automation pipelines using Python / C#.
  • Technical documentation experience with Arc42, design specs, API contracts, and operational runbooks.

  • TypeScript
  • LLM / AI APIs
