What does an audio test engineer do?

An Audio Test Engineer is responsible for evaluating and ensuring the quality and performance of audio equipment and systems, such as speakers, microphones, headphones, and sound software. They design and execute tests, analyze results, and identify issues related to sound quality, distortion, or signal processing. Their work is essential in the development and production of audio products, making sure they meet industry standards and user expectations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an audio test engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Audio Test Engineer, you need a solid understanding of acoustics, signal processing, and audio engineering, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with audio analysis tools, test measurement systems like Audio Precision, and scripting languages such as Python or MATLAB is commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you interpret data and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure accurate assessment of audio product performance and contribute to delivering high-quality audio experiences.

What are some common challenges faced by audio test engineers when working on new audio devices?

Audio Test Engineers often encounter challenges such as isolating subtle audio defects, managing interference in complex hardware environments, and ensuring compatibility across different platforms. Testing must be both rigorous and creative, as audio issues can be subjective and context-dependent. Collaboration with hardware designers, software developers, and quality assurance teams is crucial to thoroughly validate new devices and deliver a high-quality user experience.

What is the difference between Audio Test Engineer vs Audio Quality Assurance Tester?

Job description

Senior Video Test Engineer
Broadata Communications, Inc. (BCI) - Torrance, CA
On-site
Company Overview
Broadata Communications, Inc. (BCI) is a privately held California-based corporation. BCI is a leading and innovative company specializing in the development of market-driven products for the transmission of digital multimedia (video, audio, and data) over fiber. Our clients are world leaders in their industries, spanning entertainment, broadcast, medical, professional audio/video, house of worship, education, government, military, and transportation sectors. We are ISO 13485 and ISO 9001 certified, with a strong commitment to quality, innovation, and continuous improvement.
Summary
We are seeking a hands-on, detail-oriented, Senior Video Test Engineer to lead product-level and system-level validation and verification activities for BCI's high-performance digital multimedia products. This role focuses on developing senior-level test strategies, executing formal V&V testing, troubleshooting complex hardware, firmware, and software issues, improving test processes, and supporting product release, sustaining engineering, customer issue investigation, and regulatory compliance activities.
The ideal candidate has strong experience with high-speed video interfaces, medical or professional AV products, embedded systems, test automation, root cause analysis, and formal engineering documentation. This position requires the ability to work independently, mentor junior engineers, drive test execution with minimal supervision, and communicate technical findings clearly to engineering, management, customers, and external partners.
This is a hands-on role based in Torrance, CA, and is not a remote or hybrid position. We offer a fast-paced, high impact and stimulating environment with opportunities for professional growth within BCI. Veterans welcome!
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead verification, validation, troubleshooting, and testing activities for the release and maintenance of BCI and third-party hardware, firmware, and software used in high-performance digital multimedia products.
  • Develop product-level and system-level V&V strategies, test plans, test protocols, test reports, and acceptance criteria for new products, sustaining products, engineering changes, EOL component replacement, and customer-driven product updates.
  • Design, develop, and execute formal validation and verification testing, including interoperability, video performance, audio performance, environmental, accelerated life cycle, regression, reliability, and safety-related testing pursuant to applicable compliance requirements, including IEC 60601-related validation.
  • Lead high-speed video interface testing and troubleshooting for HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI, SDI, SDVoE, composite video, streaming video, color space, timing, synchronization, EDID, HDCP, and 4K60 video systems.
  • Develop and improve automated test systems, scripts, fixtures, test jigs, demo systems, and lab setups to increase test coverage, repeatability, and efficiency.
  • Perform advanced failure analysis by reviewing failure reports, reproducing complex failure modes, designing experiments, collecting objective data, and systematically localizing root cause across hardware, firmware, software, signal integrity, power, thermal, and interoperability domains.
  • Support customer RMA investigations, field issue analysis, failure reproduction, corrective action verification, and engineering documentation required for internal and external communication.
  • Review firmware and system behavior during testing, including watchdog behavior, event logging, task scheduler operation, status polling, video lock status, thermal status, link recovery, reboot/recovery behavior, and long-duration stability.
  • Generate and review accurate and thorough technical documentation, including firmware/software requirements, design specifications, test protocols, test reports, test methods, process documents, user manuals, datasheets, and engineering change documentation.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior test engineers and technicians on test setup, debugging methodology, documentation quality, and formal V&V execution.
  • Work cross-functionally with hardware, firmware, software, mechanical, quality, manufacturing, and external ODM/vendor teams to resolve issues and support product release schedules.
  • Contribute to project schedules, task breakdowns, resource planning, risk identification, and test execution priorities.
  • Maintain and improve lab organization, including common and dedicated lab benches, test equipment, mechanical tools, 3D printers, electronics tools, cables, fixtures, ESD controls, and engineering samples.
  • Support continuous improvement of BCI's engineering processes, V&V templates, troubleshooting procedures, test automation, lab standards, and quality system documentation.
Job responsibilities within our organization are dynamic. This may not be a complete list of duties. Other responsibilities and duties may be assigned by your supervisor or upper management.
