What types of projects and technologies can I expect to work with during an Audio Software Engineer Internship?

As an Audio Software Engineer Intern, you'll typically work on projects involving audio signal processing, plugin development, or integrating audio features into software applications. You may use languages like C++, Python, or JUCE framework, and collaborate with senior engineers, sound designers, and QA teams. Interns often contribute to both new feature development and debugging existing code, gaining exposure to real-world audio engineering challenges. This hands-on experience is valuable for developing your technical skills and understanding the collaborative nature of audio software development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Audio Software Engineer Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Audio Software Engineer Intern, you typically need foundational knowledge in computer science, digital signal processing (DSP), and experience with programming languages like C++ or Python. Familiarity with audio development frameworks (such as JUCE), version control systems (like Git), and possibly experience with digital audio workstations (DAWs) is highly valued. Strong problem-solving skills, creativity, and effective communication help interns contribute to collaborative projects and adapt to new challenges. These skills and qualifications are crucial for developing high-quality audio applications and effectively integrating with engineering teams.

What does an Audio Software Engineer Intern do?

An Audio Software Engineer Intern assists in developing, testing, and maintaining software that processes, records, or plays back audio data. They typically work on coding audio algorithms, integrating audio features into larger systems, and troubleshooting audio-related bugs. Interns often collaborate with audio engineers, designers, and other developers to improve the quality and functionality of audio products. This role is ideal for students or recent graduates interested in both software development and sound technology.

What is the difference between Audio Software Engineer Internship vs Audio Software Developer?

AspectAudio Software Engineer InternshipAudio Software Developer
CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduate in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related fieldsBachelor's or Master's in similar fields, with professional experience
Work EnvironmentInternship programs in tech companies, audio tech firms, or gaming companiesFull-time employment in software development teams focused on audio applications
Industry UsageUsed mainly for entry-level training, internships, and skill developmentUsed for ongoing product development, maintenance, and innovation in audio software

The main difference is that an Audio Software Engineer Internship is an entry-level, temporary position aimed at gaining experience, while an Audio Software Developer is a full-time role focused on creating and maintaining audio software products. Internships often serve as a stepping stone to full-time developer roles in the industry.

Job description

Our client, a leading innovator in the automotive audio industry, is seeking an experienced Audio Software Engineer to support advanced audio system development. This engineer will work closely with cross-functional teams to enhance audio performance across Android-based platforms within next-generation vehicles. This is a 6-month contract that will be working remotely with candidates being local to the Palo Alto, CA or Long Beach, CA area.
This is an urgent need, and candidates with strong Android audio stack experience will be prioritized. A background in DSP and familiarity with Audio Weaver (AWE) is highly desirable but not required.
Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, integrate, and optimize audio software components within the Android audio framework.
  • Collaborate with DSP engineers to implement and tune audio algorithms.
  • Debug and resolve audio stability, latency, routing, and playback/recording issues.
  • Support audio system bring-up and validation on embedded automotive platforms.
  • Work with internal teams and external partners to ensure audio features meet vehicle program requirements.
  • Document designs, test results, and system behavior for internal engineering teams.
Required Qualifications
  • 3+ years of experience with Android audio stack or Android HAL-level audio development.
  • Strong understanding of audio signal flow, routing, and real-time audio constraints.
  • Solid foundation in DSP concepts (filters, gain structure, tuning, EQ, etc.).
  • Proficiency in C/C++, Java, or Kotlin for embedded or Android development.
  • Experience debugging audio issues in embedded systems.
  • Ability to work in fast-paced, cross-functional engineering environments.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience using or integrating Audio Weaver (AWE) SDK.
  • Background in automotive audio systems or consumer audio devices.
  • Familiarity with audio measurement tools (Audio Precision, REW, etc.).
  • Experience working with SoC audio subsystems (Qualcomm, TI, NXP, etc.).
