Job description

Enjoy the outdoors while working this summer! Atwood Lake Park is currently looking for a Park Specialist! Our employees enjoy working outdoors in an environment that promotes recreational opportunities for the public at our beautiful lake location. As a public organization, our employees pay into Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS), which may contribute to service credit in other public retirement systems. The pay rate for this position starts at $18.00 per hour. 

Note: This position is classified as a variable hours position. This means that if hired, the employee would remain in an active status with MWCD throughout the year, but the working hours will vary. Summary of Responsibilities

Assists MWCD guests in a non-OPOTA certified role with the education and application of MWCD rules within the park. This position will spend considerable time performing public relations activities and public education, ensuring excellent customer service is provided to all MWCD guests. May also perform basic maintenance and light grounds keeping tasks as necessary.

Practices standard MWCD safety procedures in performing job duties and assists other MWCD personnel as required.

Essential Functions include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

Welcomes visitors, provides information and assistance to park visitors, and responds to visitor questions. Walks and/or drives through assigned parks, beaches and recreation areas to ensure safety of park guests and staff and deter criminal activity. Makes rounds regularly throughout work shifts to maintain high visibility with visitors. Looks for signs of vandalism, misuse, trespass, maintenance problems, or safety hazards, and reports any findings to Park Manager, Assistant Park Manager, or Ranger.

Provides building security and responds to emergency situations by immediately contacting authorities if incidents occur. Serves public by providing information pertinent to MWCD facilities, safety requirements, boater education, and points of interest in the area.

May issue verbal warnings in accordance with operational standards.

Provides information regarding the park, rental requirements, and park amenities.

Assists with special events, including set-up/breakdown, parking logistics/traffic control, and programming.

Conveys basic park rules and communicates with management staff and public safety officials during emergencies.

Communicates with ranger staff regarding any suspicious activity or persons on MWCD grounds.

Assists MWCD guests with locating a campsite, monitors campsites and reservations, completes daily camp lot occupied checks, and ensures Campground Rules and Guidelines are being followed. Responds to visitor questions, requiring basic knowledge of MWCD and the surrounding area. Provides brochures and gives directions.

Assists gate and registration with lot checks, deposits, checking car passes, and assists with handling change funds.

Administers basic first aid/CPR as required. Reports mechanical and or safety issues to appropriate supervisor.

May perform administrative work in the park office including, but not limited to, answering phones and completing reports. Notifies appropriate manager of any safety concerns, law enforcement or customer issues that require further attention.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Other Requirements, Expectations, or Unusual Conditions

This position requires weekend, evening and holiday work. Overtime work is required as necessary. Working extra hours during spring and summer months is required, with some workdays exceeding 10 hours.

Skills and Abilities

Education:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience:

Experience in park operations, record keeping, computers and radio communication systems are preferred. Strong skills in working with people and the public in general are required.

Computer Skills:

Basic computer skills required

Certifications & Licenses:

The employee will be required to obtain or renew a CPR/first aid certification. Driver’s license valid in the state of Ohio required. Must be insurable by MWCD fleet insurance.

Abilities:

Ability to maintain confidential information. Good communication skills and the ability to work well with the public are required. Ability to recognize unusual or threatening conditions and initiate proper protocols; ability to deal with problems involving few variables within a familiar context; ability to carry out instructions; ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
