POSITION SPECIFICS

The department is looking to fill the position of an Academic Adviser - Meteorology and Atmospheric Science. This position will manage all aspects of Department undergraduate program, including recruitment, first-year student advising, events, scholarships, and matriculation through the B.S. program. This position will work directly with students on matters relating to their courses and academic progress and serve as the primary adviser to first-year students. The recruiting aspect of this position is critical in maintaining continual growth within the program.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to inclusive practices that promote diversity, along with sound judgment, effective decision-making and communication skills, and the ability to collaborate well as part of a team. Experience with iTwo, LionPATH, and eSteward is a plus. Interested applicants should submit a resume and cover letter online.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Advise first-year students in course selection, scheduling, and other academic matters. Provide referrals to campus resources.

  • Process course enrollments and drops as needed, particularly for controlled courses.

  • Enter academic requirement (degree audit) substitutions and certify students for graduation.

  • Maintain department databases and student files. Compile weekly admission statistics and data from iTwo and LionPATH as requested by Department Head and other entities.

  • Conduct new student orientation (NSO) in collaboration with College of Earth and Mineral Sciences advising team.

  • Coordinate and disburse student scholarships and awards; serve on and provide guidance to department scholarship committee. Manage eSteward system and generate scholarship and award letters to students and donors.

  • Coordinate and participate in student events including the Climate Science Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU), EMS Exposition Open House (EMEX), freshman orientation experience-Total Engagement with EMS (TEEMS), Admitted Student Events (ASE), Spend a Summer Day (SASD), and off-site recruiting fairs. Serve as EMS Spring Commencement usher. Events require work on a few weekends and evenings per year.

  • Oversee creation of weekly online newsletter for undergraduate students, including Commonwealth campus students. Assist in preparation of department brochures and marketing materials relating to the undergraduate program.

  • Provide information on value, availability and procedures related to internships.

  • Assist faculty with policies and procedures regarding students and courses to include SEEQs.

  • May assist with alumni and other department activities.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

Master's Degree 3+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted Required Certifications: None

This position requires the following clearances in addition to applicable background checks: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check.Penn State does not sponsor or take over sponsorship of a staff employment Visa. SALARY & BENEFITS

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades, is $46,400.00 - $67,300.00.
