Job description

Position Title: Microelectronics Device Research Engineer

Apex Microdevices is seeking an entry-level scientist or engineer in microelectronic device prototyping and fabrication to serve as a collaborative member of the Electromagnetic Materials and Processing Research Team within the Foundational Technologies Directorate (formerly the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate), of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB) in Dayton, Ohio. The role will support the design, fabrication, and testing of advanced semiconductor devices for memory, computing, communications, and power electronics. Materials of interest include magnetic materials such as Yttrium Iron Garnet, ferroelectric nitrides such as AlScN, and the dielectrics, contacts, and other materials needed for device prototyping.

Responsibilities for this role include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Conduct research on the design, fabrication, and testing of advanced semiconductor devices.
  • Develop and apply cleanroom fabrication processes, including deposition, etching, lithography, and metrology.
  • Collaborate with AFRL engineers and scientists and with academic and industry partners to mature emerging electronic materials toward application-ready technologies.
  • Lead or contribute to peer-reviewed publications.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • U.S. citizenship required
  • Master's degree in electrical engineering, materials science, physics, or related discipline
  • Entry level, 0-5 years of professional experience post BS or MS.
  • Experience in cleanroom device fabrication using etch, deposition, lithography, and metrology capabilities
  • Ability to be self-motivated, work independently across multiple groups, and collaborate effectively with researchers from different technical backgrounds
  • Knowledge and understanding of lithography, etching, deposition, and related metrology.
  • Ability to pass a background check required for working at WPAFB and accessing their computer networks.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Background in compute or memory device electrical characterization
  • Broad expertise in materials characterization, device fabrication, and prototyping
  • Strong record of peer-reviewed publications demonstrating expertise in cleanroom microelectronics fabrication
