What is an at home sewing job?

An at home sewing job involves completing sewing tasks, such as making garments, home décor items, or accessories, from your own home rather than a factory or business location. People working these jobs may sew for companies on a contract basis, run their own small business, or accept individual commissions. This type of work provides flexibility, but may require investment in sewing equipment and the ability to market your services or find clients. At home sewing jobs can be part-time or full-time, depending on workload and business model.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an At Home Sewing Professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as an At Home Sewing Professional, you need strong sewing technique, pattern reading, and fabric knowledge, often supported by experience or formal coursework in textiles or fashion. Familiarity with sewing machines, sergers, cutting tools, and sometimes design software like Adobe Illustrator or pattern-making software is valuable. Attention to detail, creativity, time management, and effective communication with clients are key soft skills for success in this role. These abilities ensure high-quality, customized results and help maintain client satisfaction in a competitive market.

What is the difference between At Home Sewing vs Dressmaker?

AspectAt Home SewingDressmaker
CredentialsBasic sewing skills, sometimes beginner to intermediateAdvanced sewing skills, experience in custom garment creation
Work EnvironmentHome-based, flexible hoursStudio or client location, often custom orders
Industry UsageHobbyists, small-scale productionCustom clothing, formal wear, tailored garments
Common Search IntentMaking clothes at home, sewing projectsCustom dressmaking, tailoring services

At Home Sewing generally involves individuals sewing for personal use or small-scale projects at home, often with basic skills. Dressmakers typically have advanced skills and create custom garments for clients, working in dedicated studios or shops. While both roles involve sewing, dressmakers focus on tailored, high-quality clothing, whereas at home sewing is more hobby or small-scale oriented.

What are some common challenges faced by individuals working in at-home sewing roles, and how can they be effectively managed?

A common challenge for at-home sewing professionals is managing time effectively, especially when balancing multiple client orders or personal projects. Additionally, maintaining a well-organized and ergonomic workspace is essential to avoid fatigue and ensure efficiency. Communication with clients can also be more challenging remotely, so clear, prompt responses and setting realistic deadlines are important. Staying up-to-date with sewing trends and techniques can help you remain competitive, and joining online sewing communities can offer support and collaboration opportunities.

Job description

Description:

About Us

From weddings and celebrations to corporate gatherings and major sporting events, our team works behind the scenes to bring events to life. We take pride in delivering exceptional experiences, embracing creativity, and making every event run seamlessly.

We believe extraordinary events start with extraordinary people. If you take pride in your work, enjoy collaborating with a supportive team, and want to be part of something bigger, you’ll feel at home here.

About the Job

The Tenting Vinyl Sewing & Repair Technician plays a critical role in maintaining the quality, safety, and appearance of our tenting and event inventory. This position is responsible for repairing and maintaining vinyl tent tops, sidewalls, liners, and related fabric products that support successful events across our markets. Working closely with warehouse, operations, and event teams, this role helps ensure equipment is event-ready, professionally maintained, and delivered to clients at the highest standard.

We are a highly team-oriented operation where collaboration across departments is essential to delivering successful events. While this role primarily focuses on vinyl sewing and repair, team members are expected to support warehouse, logistics, installation, and operational needs when business demands require it.

What You’ll Do

  • Execute repairs on tent vinyl, sidewalls, liners, and fabric materials using industrial sewing machines and repair equipment
  • Ensure all tenting inventory meets company quality and safety standards before deployment to events
  • Troubleshoot damage to vinyl materials, seams, zippers, straps, and hardware components to determine appropriate repair solutions
  • Collaborate with warehouse and operations teams to prioritize repairs based on event schedules and inventory needs
  • Maintain organized repair stations, sewing equipment, tools, and material inventory to support efficient workflow
  • Track repair status, material usage, and maintenance needs to help improve inventory readiness and longevity
  • Support preventive maintenance efforts by inspecting tent products for wear, tear, and structural concerns
  • Proactively communicate repair timelines, inventory concerns, and material shortages with leadership and team members
  • Deliver consistent craftsmanship and attention to detail while working in a fast-paced event operations environment
  • Assist with loading, staging, and handling tent materials as needed to support warehouse operations and event execution

What You Bring

Required

  • Willingness to work across multiple departments and support team operations as business needs evolve
  • Positive, team-oriented attitude with the flexibility to adapt in a fast-paced event environment
  • 1–3 years of experience in industrial sewing, vinyl repair, upholstery, canvas work, or related heavy-fabric environments
  • Experience operating industrial sewing machines and working with heavy-duty materials such as vinyl, canvas, or PVC fabrics
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to produce durable, high-quality repairs
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs and work in warehouse or production environments
  • Ability to stand, bend, and perform repetitive tasks throughout the workday
  • Reliable attendance and flexibility to support seasonal event schedules, including occasional overtime or weekends

Nice to Have

  • Experience in the tenting, event rental, awning, marine canvas, or upholstery industries
  • Familiarity with heat welding, patching techniques, or industrial fabric fabrication
  • Forklift certification or warehouse equipment experience
  • Basic knowledge of inventory systems, repair tracking, or maintenance documentation
  • Ability to read measurements, patterns, and repair specifications accurately

What Makes Us Special

Compensation and Benefits

  • Competitive pay: Hourly + overtime opportunities
  • Paid time off and company holidays
  • Comprehensive benefits package including:
    • Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance
    • Company-Paid Basic Life and AD&D Insurance
    • Short-Term and Long-Term Disability
    • Telehealth and Wellness programs
    • Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs)
    • Employee Assistance Program
    • 401(k) with employer matching

Our Culture & Work

  • One team mentality: We operate as a unified team across departments. Whether supporting the warehouse, helping prepare equipment, or assisting operational teams during busy periods, everyone contributes to the success of our events and our customers.
