What does an Associate Software Engineer do?

An Associate Software Engineer is an entry-level position responsible for assisting in the design, development, testing, and maintenance of software applications. They work closely under the supervision of more experienced engineers to write code, fix bugs, and contribute to software projects. This role typically involves learning company-specific technologies and best practices, collaborating with team members, and gradually taking on more complex tasks as skills develop.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Associate Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Software Engineer, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Java, Python, or C++), software development principles, and a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with development tools like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and issue tracking systems is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication help you collaborate and adapt in dynamic project environments. These skills and qualities are essential for delivering robust code, supporting team goals, and driving continuous improvement in software projects.

What are some common challenges faced by Associate Software Engineers when transitioning from academic projects to real-world development teams?

Associate Software Engineers often find the transition to professional environments challenging due to differences in project scale, codebase complexity, and the need to follow established development processes. Unlike academic projects, real-world teams typically use version control systems, conduct code reviews, and adhere to specific coding standards. Collaborating with cross-functional teams, understanding business requirements, and managing tight deadlines are also new experiences. Embracing mentorship, asking questions, and being open to feedback can help ease this transition and support professional growth.

Job description

Job Summary:
Applied Research Associates, Inc. (aka ARA) is an employee-owned international research and engineering company. They are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to develop software that connects physics-based Modeling and Simulation tools in a Digital Engineering environment, focusing on integrating tools used throughout the warfighting capability development cycle.
Responsibilities:
โ€ข Help lead the design and implementation of software that connects physics-based M&S tools and analysis capabilities in a Digital Engineering environment.
โ€ข Define and evolve schemas and data flows to move simulation and analysis results between tools (e.g., relational, document, or graph data models or message queueing strategies).
โ€ข Design and implement APIs (e.g., REST or gRPC) and integration patterns that enable robust, scalable connections between tools.
โ€ข Regularly propose and execute de-risking prototypes to explore ideas, clarify requirements, and reduce technical uncertainty before making design commitments.
โ€ข Take high-level objectives from PMs/PIs/technical leads and independently propose technical approaches, plans, and milestones.
โ€ข Help shape the technical roadmap for parts of our Digital Engineering environment, including identifying gaps, proposing improvements, and prioritizing integration work.
โ€ข Contribute to engineering practices across the team through design discussions, code reviews, and mentorship of less-experienced engineers.
Qualifications:
Required:
โ€ข U.S. Citizenship
โ€ข The nature of work (i.e. interactions with the intelligence community and DoD programs) requires eligibility to apply for and hold a US security clearance; selected applicants will undergo a security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements at the time of employment
โ€ข BS, MS, or PhD in engineering, computer science, physics, operations research, applied mathematics, or a closely related field.
โ€ข 8+ years relevant work experience with BS
โ€ข 6+ years relevant work experience with MS
โ€ข Proven experience with programming languages (e.g., Java, Python, C++, or TypeScript) for software development and/or data analysis.
โ€ข Demonstrated ability to turn ambiguous goals into concrete technical plans, including breaking down work, identifying risks, and selecting appropriate tools and approaches.
โ€ข Strong communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to work closely with domain experts and technical leadership to refine goals and designs.
Preferred:
โ€ข Experience with backend web frameworks and RESTful API development.
โ€ข Experience developing plugins and/or functionality for DevSecOps, MBSE, or PLM tools.
โ€ข Familiarity Systems Modeling Language (SysML) v2 and especially the API and Services specification.
โ€ข Familiarity with cloud technologies and platforms (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes, AWS).
โ€ข Substantive experience in simulating a war fighting domain, e.g., electromagnetic spectrum operations.
โ€ข Existing DoD security clearance
Company:
ARA provides research, engineering, and technical support services. Founded in 1979, the company is headquartered in Albuquerque, USA, with a team of 1001-5000 employees. The company is currently Late Stage.
