What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Associate Software Development Engineer In Test, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Software Development Engineer In Test, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Java, Python, or JavaScript), software testing principles, and a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with automated testing frameworks (like Selenium or JUnit), version control systems (such as Git), and CI/CD tools is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with development teams and identify issues efficiently. These skills and qualities are critical for ensuring software quality, reducing defects, and supporting the agile development process.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

Highly experienced software engineers, especially those in senior or lead roles at large tech companies, can earn $500,000 or more annually through base salary, bonuses, and stock options. Will QA or SDET get replaced by AI?

QA and SDET roles involve designing, developing, and maintaining automated testing frameworks, which require critical thinking and understanding of complex systems. While AI can assist with test automation and generate test cases, human oversight remains essential for interpreting results, handling edge cases, and ensuring software quality. Therefore, these roles are likely to evolve rather than be fully replaced by AI.

What is an Associate Software Development Engineer in Test?

An Associate Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) is an entry-level professional who designs, develops, and maintains automated tests to ensure the quality and functionality of software applications. They work closely with software developers and quality assurance teams to identify bugs, create test scripts, and automate testing processes. Their primary focus is on improving software reliability and streamlining the testing workflow by using programming skills to build robust test frameworks. This role often serves as a stepping stone to more advanced positions in quality engineering or software development.

What are some typical challenges faced by an Associate Software Development Engineer In Test (SDET) when collaborating with development teams?

As an Associate SDET, one common challenge is ensuring clear communication between QA and development teams, especially when clarifying requirements or reporting bugs. SDETs often need to advocate for quality while balancing release deadlines, which requires effective collaboration and negotiation skills. Additionally, integrating automated tests into fast-paced development cycles can be complex, especially when dealing with evolving codebases or shifting priorities. Overcoming these challenges involves proactive communication, continuous learning, and adaptability within agile team structures.

Are SDET and QA the same?

An SDET (Software Development Engineer in Test) is a specialized QA professional who develops automated tests and often has programming skills, whereas traditional QA roles focus on manual testing and quality assurance processes. While both aim to ensure software quality, SDETs typically have a stronger emphasis on automation, coding, and testing tools, making their roles distinct within the software development lifecycle.

Job description

Description:

Sharetec is looking for a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to join our team!

At Sharetec, we believe in a people-first business. Our mission is to make millions of peopleโ€™s lives easier by developing innovative core banking and lending software solutions for credit unions and their members. Our customers rely on us for powerful financial technology that enhances operations across accounting, lending, member services, and online banking โ€” and they count on us to be a caring, trusted partner in their success.

The Role

Weโ€™re looking for a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to build and own the test automation infrastructure that powers our engineering teamโ€™s ability to ship quality software with confidence. This is a builder role โ€” not a role for someone who maintains inherited frameworks or adds tests to existing suites.

Youโ€™ll design automation frameworks from the ground up, integrate them into our CI/CD pipelines, serve as the engineering teamโ€™s subject matter expert on test automation tooling and practices, and help raise the quality bar across the organization. Sharetecโ€™s core platform is a long-lived .NET system, and experience testing production-grade legacy applications is essential.

If youโ€™re someone who takes pride in building things that last, cares deeply about quality as a team sport, and gets energized by the challenge of testing complex, high-stakes financial software, this role may be for you.

Position Details

This is a full-time, exempt position. Candidates may work remotely from anywhere in the United States, with the exception of California. The starting salary range for this position is $110,000 โ€“ $120,000 based on experience, plus bonus eligibility.

Who Will Love This Job

  • Someone who finds more satisfaction in making something better than building something new โ€” and understands why thatโ€™s harder
  • Someone who believes that technology serving peopleโ€™s financial lives is worth doing with real care and precision
  • Someone who is energized by a company in motion โ€” where the roadmap is growing and your contributions shape the direction
  • Someone who is as comfortable presenting to an engineering team as they are rolling up their sleeves to solve a hard infrastructure problem
  • Someone who builds automation frameworks from first principles and takes ownership of the architecture decisions that follow
  • Someone who sees quality as a team responsibility โ€” not a gate at the end of the process
  • Someone who is energized by complex, long-lived systems and the unique testing challenges they bring
  • Someone who wants to leave the codebase more testable than they found it

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Test Automation Architecture & Ownership

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable automated test frameworks from scratch โ€” not inherited or extended from existing suites
  • Serve as the primary subject matter expert on test automation tools, techniques, and best practices across the engineering organization
  • Establish architecture, folder structure, conventions, and shared patterns for the automation codebase
  • Maintain test suites for reliability and maintainability as the platform evolves

CI/CD Integration & Quality Infrastructure

  • Integrate automated test suites into CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, or equivalent) to support continuous delivery
  • Design pipeline triggers, handle test parallelism and flakiness, and own reporting and alerting within the pipeline
  • Identify gaps in current testing infrastructure and proactively propose and implement improvements
  • Partner with DevOps and Engineering to ensure test execution environments are reliable and representative

Cross-Functional Partnership & Quality Advocacy

  • Partner with product managers and developers to integrate automation early in the SDLC, promoting a shift-left quality mindset
  • Influence team QA practices through documentation, mentorship, and standards-setting โ€” not just personal execution
  • Review pull requests for testability and advocate for design choices that improve coverage and maintainability

Continuous Improvement & Industry Awareness

  • Stay current on emerging testing tools, frameworks, and industry trends
  • Evaluate and advocate for adoption of new tools and approaches where they improve quality outcomes

Qualified Candidates Should Have

Required

  • 5+ years of professional software testing or SDET experience
  • Demonstrable experience building test automation frameworks from scratch โ€” not just using or maintaining inherited ones
  • Hands-on Playwright experience in a production-grade project
  • Python proficiency demonstrated through professional or open-source work
  • API testing ownership using Postman or equivalent โ€” including contract testing, data-driven tests, and CI integration
  • CI/CD pipeline ownership โ€” built or significantly extended a pipeline using GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, Jenkins, or equivalent
  • Experience testing .NET / C# applications in a production environment
  • Experience with long-lived production platforms โ€” not just greenfield or short-term contract work

Preferred

  • Experience in fintech, financial services, or SaaS B2B software
  • Familiarity with performance or load testing tools such as JMeter or k6
  • Experience with cloud-based or containerized test execution environments
  • Exposure to security testing concepts and practices
  • Early leadership signals โ€” mentoring peers, defining QA standards, or influencing team practices
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent hands-on experience)
