What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Associate Product Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Product Manager, you need analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a background in business, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with product management tools like Jira, Trello, or Asana, and experience with data analytics platforms such as Google Analytics or Mixpanel, are typically beneficial. Strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability help you collaborate across departments and respond to changing user needs. These skills are essential for successfully driving product initiatives and ensuring alignment with business goals.

What are some common challenges faced by Associate Product Managers, and how can they overcome them?

Associate Product Managers often face the challenge of balancing input from multiple stakeholders while maintaining focus on the product's vision and goals. Navigating ambiguity and managing shifting priorities are also typical hurdles, as projects can evolve quickly based on market feedback or leadership direction. To overcome these challenges, it's important to develop strong communication skills, stay organized with clear documentation, and proactively seek mentorship from senior product managers. Building relationships across engineering, design, and marketing teams can also help ensure alignment and smooth collaboration.

What are Associate Product Managers?

Associate Product Managers (APMs) are entry-level professionals who help develop and manage products within an organization. They work under the guidance of senior product managers, assisting with tasks such as market research, product development, and coordination between engineering, design, and marketing teams. APMs gain hands-on experience in the product lifecycle and often use this role as a stepping stone to more senior product management positions.

Job description

ABOUT BIP CAPITAL

BIP Capital is an integrated private market investment platform built to create and capture opportunities through BIP Ventures traditional venture anchor funds, an Evergreen equity BDC, and private credit offerings. With a distinctive multi-stage, multi-sector investment approach and a growing array of capital offerings, BIP Capital has generated consistent top quartile returns since 2009.

ABOUT BIP VENTURES

BIP Ventures, the North American-focused venture capital division of BIP Capital, is a highly active venture capital firm based in the Southeast. BIP Ventures partners with extraordinary founders to drive exceptional outcomes. Since 2007, BIP Ventures has invested in the success of B2B software and tech-enabled service businesses at all stages of maturity. In addition to capital, it supports entrepreneurs with access to infrastructure, acumen, and talent, resulting in category-leading companies.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

We are champions of our investors' goals and stewards of founders' dreams, but more than that, we are ethical, honest partners who serve, educate, and protect our founders and investors. We take on the challenges and complex conversations because we operate out of integrity and genuine care.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are looking for an enthusiastic, growth-oriented Associate Product Owner to join our team and contribute to the development of BIP's innovative technology products. This is a support-focused, execution-oriented role โ€” an excellent opportunity for a motivated early-career product professional who is eager to learn, comfortable with shifting priorities, and ready to grow within a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

As an Associate Product Owner at BIP, you will work hands-on with our Jarvis platform โ€” supporting backlog management, writing user stories and release notes, managing our Jira Service Desk, performing QA, and collaborating closely with engineering and cross-functional stakeholders. We're looking for someone with strong interpersonal skills who can build rapport with engineers, communicate clearly under ambiguity, and avoid analysis paralysis when priorities shift. The ideal candidate brings curiosity, decisiveness, and the ability to operate effectively in a complex domain โ€” including finance and venture capital concepts.

LOCATION: Hybrid with ability to be on-site when required out of Buckhead / Atlanta Office.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Backlog Support: Assist in maintaining and prioritizing the product backlog under the guidance of senior team members, ensuring the team is focused on delivering high-value work.
  • User Story & Release Note Writing: Write and refine clear, concise user stories with well-defined acceptance criteria; draft release notes to communicate product updates to stakeholders.
  • Jira Service Desk Management: Own day-to-day triage and resolution of service desk requests, maintaining a 24โ€“48-hour SLA for responses and escalating as appropriate.
  • Sprint Participation: Actively participate in grooming and sprint planning sessions; support efforts to keep the backlog 1โ€“2 sprints ahead with 'ready' work.
  • QA & Feature Validation: Perform acceptance testing and quality assurance on user stories to ensure features meet requirements and are free of critical defects before release.
  • Small-to-Medium Feature Delivery: Take ownership of small and medium-sized features end-to-end, from writing epics and stories as directed through to release.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Serve as a day-to-day liaison between engineering and business stakeholders; build strong working relationships, keep communication clear
  • Multi-System Requirements Management: Manage requirements across at least three different systems, ensuring they are clear, traceable, and aligned across stakeholders and workstreams.
  • Feedback Collection: Participate in sprint reviews, gather and document stakeholder feedback to continuously improve the product and inform backlog prioritization.
  • Documentation: Support the creation of process flows, user guides, and internal documentation as needed.

Requirements

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • Experience: 1 to 3 years of experience in product development, project coordination, or working within Agile/Scrum teams, specifically with software, platform, or web-based products. Experience in a related analytical or technology role will also be considered.
  • Technical Acumen: Jira is the primary tool; Confluence is a plus. Experience with Rally or equivalent Agile platforms is acceptable. Basic familiarity with the software development lifecycle is expected.
  • AI Fluency: Hands-on experience using AI tools โ€” such as Claude, ChatGPT, or similar platforms โ€” for prototyping, design exploration, or accelerating product workflows. Comfort applying AI tools practically in a product context is expected.
  • Domain Comfort: Comfortable working within complex domains, including finance or venture capital concepts. You don't need to arrive as an expert, but you must be willing and able to learn quickly.
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey ideas clearly to engineers, stakeholders, and teammates.
  • People Skills: Friendly, curious, and emotionally intelligent. You build rapport easily โ€” especially with engineers โ€” adapt to various personalities and bring energy that improves team dynamics.
  • Self-Starter Mentality: You take initiative, ask questions to fill knowledge gaps, and demonstrate resourcefulness.
  • Resilience & Adaptability: Comfortable operating within shifting priorities and frequent pivots. Open to feedback and quick to adapt, you see ambiguity as a normal part of a fast-paced environment.
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to gather and interpret information to support product decisions and backlog prioritization. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are prioritized over deep analytics.

Education: A bachelor's degree in business, computer science, or a related field is preferred โ€” but equivalent work experience is welcomed.

SUCCESS METRICS

  • At 90 Days: Demonstrate foundational knowledge of the Jarvis platform and other internal systems, and team workflows. Build positive working relationships with key stakeholders by supporting sprint ceremonies, triaging Jira Service Desk requests within the 24โ€“48-hour SLA and contributing well-written user stories. Maintain a backlog with 1โ€“2 sprints of groomed, ready work.
  • At Six Months: Independently triage and resolve 90% of service desk requests within SLA. Contribute consistently to sprint ceremonies and maintain backlog management 3โ€“4 sprints ahead. Take ownership of at least one small project end-to-end, delivering quality work from user story through release. Maintain accurate Jira documentation and actively support stakeholder feedback loops.
  • At One Year: Demonstrate readiness to independently manage the backlog and own 1โ€“2 active medium projects end-to-end. Begin contributing strategic insights to product decisions. Become a reliable Jarvis platform resource, contribute to internal documentation, and show clear progress toward full Product Owner-level responsibilities.
