Provides technical leadership and operational support for Distributed Control Systems (DCS)Emerson DeltaV, SIS (Emerson DeltaV), Advanced Process Control (APC) applications, alarm management systems, process historian and visualization tools, and process control strategies within assigned operating units. Responsible for maintaining control system reliability, optimizing process performance, supporting capital projects, and ensuring compliance with Process Safety Management (PSM), Operational Excellence (OE), and Management of Change (MOC) requirements.

A Day in the Life

Process Control & Automation Support

  • Serve as the primary Operations and Engineering contact for process control, automation, and regulatory control issues.
  • Provide technical support for DCS/SIS controls, APC applications, control strategies, graphics, batch logic, and operator interfaces.
  • Troubleshoot process control issues through diagnostics, loop tuning, performance monitoring, and optimization efforts.
  • Monitor DCS/SIS health, reliability, availability, and performance.
  • Support Operations and Engineering to maximize APC utilization and effectiveness.
  • Maintain and support PI Vision, XLReporter, Plant State Suite (PSS) reports, and Power BI tools.
  • Manage control system backup, verification, and recovery activities.

Performance Monitoring & Optimization

  • Monitor and analyze KPIs for alarm management, APC performance, loop performance, and control system effectiveness.
  • Identify performance gaps and collaborate with Operations and Engineering to implement corrective actions.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives to enhance process stability, safety, and operational efficiency.

Alarm Management & Control System Governance

  • Serve as Site Alarm Management Champion.
  • Lead alarm rationalization activities, maintain the Master Alarm Database in Plant State Suite (PSS), and ensure compliance with alarm management standards and procedures.
  • Manage control system configuration changes, graphics updates, and documentation in accordance with Management of Change (MOC) requirements.
  • Develop and maintain process historian tags and ensure data integrity.

Project Execution & Technical Leadership

  • Support capital projects through design reviews, implementation, commissioning, startup, FAT, and SAT activities.
  • Support DCS obsolescence programs, modernization efforts, and long-range planning initiatives.
  • Provide process control support during turnarounds, startups, and major operational events.

Process Safety & Compliance

  • Lead MOC activities related to control system and alarm modifications.
  • Complete MOC and Intelex action items according to site requirements and timelines.
  • Provide technical expertise for PSM programs, including Alarm Management, PHA participation, Incident Investigations, Safety Critical Equipment and Variables, and Safety System Disablement.
  • Conduct Operational Excellence self-assessments and process safety audits.
  • Ensure HSE, OE, and Process Safety concerns are identified, escalated, investigated, and resolved.

Training & Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Partner with Operations and Engineering teams to develop and deliver training on process control systems and application changes.
  • Coach users on effective utilization of APC applications and process control tools.
  • Collaborate across functions to achieve site performance targets and continuous improvement objectives.
  • Support facility siting and risk assessment projects as required.
  • Provide off-hours support as needed.

Min. Qualifications

Associates degree in a related field

  • Typically Minimum 5 years prior experience working in the refining,petrochemical, or chemical process industries

Must have a minimum of 5 years of industry experience in Control Systems Engineering (CSE), Console Operations, or I&E.

Working knowledge of process control, computer networking systems, or programmable logic controllers is required.

Individual must be capable of planning and managing the work of a small group of resources, both internal and

external that may be involved in the installation, repair, diagnostic testing or upgrade of the process control systems.

Preferred Qualifications

Typically 5 years of industry experience in Control Systems Engineering (CSE), Console Operations, or I&E.

SIS certification

Experience with configuration and programming in Emerson DeltaV process control systems.

Working knowledge of batch process control systems.

Working knowledge DeltaV, including batch programming   and SIS systems.

Prior experience in DMC Aspen Tech advanced process control.
