Job description

Network Engineer - C4ISR Rack Production & Integration
Job Summary
The Network Engineer supports the build, assembly, configuration, and testing of C4ISR network and communication equipment racks within Navy C4ISR production environments. This entry-level role performs hands-on technical tasks under the guidance of senior engineers, ensuring all work adheres to NAVWAR/NIWC production standards, technical baselines, and quality assurance requirements. The engineer develops foundational skills in network integration, troubleshooting, and configuration management while contributing directly to fleet-readiness production activities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Rack Build & Assembly
  • Assist with physical assembly of C4ISR network and communication racks, including mounting equipment, routing cables, and installing power components.
  • Follow rack elevation diagrams, wiring schematics, BOMs, and government-approved technical data packages.
  • Perform basic cable fabrication, labeling, and continuity checks.

System Integration Support
  • Install and connect routers, switches, servers, firewalls, crypto devices, and ancillary components under senior engineer supervision.
  • Load approved software images, firmware, and patches onto network devices.
  • Support initial configuration of VLANs, IP addressing, routing basics, and device hardening.

Testing & Verification
  • Execute basic test procedures including connectivity checks, interface validation, and device communication tests.
  • Document test results, discrepancies, and corrective actions.
  • Support senior engineers during functional, performance, and failover testing.

Troubleshooting
  • Identify and resolve straightforward hardware, cabling, and configuration issues.
  • Escalate complex problems to senior engineers and assist in root-cause analysis.
  • Use diagnostic tools (e.g., ping, traceroute, Wireshark) to support troubleshooting activities.

Documentation & Configuration Management
  • Maintain accurate build logs, configuration notes, and test documentation.
  • Follow configuration management processes for version control, baseline tracking, and updates.
  • Support QA reviews and government inspections.

Production Support & Collaboration
  • Work closely with senior engineers, production technicians, QA personnel, and logistics teams.
  • Follow NAVWAR/NIWC production standards, safety protocols, and ESD handling procedures.
  • Participate in team meetings, technical reviews, and training sessions.

Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Foundational understanding of networking concepts (TCP/IP, routing, switching, VLANs).
  • Basic experience with Cisco or Juniper network devices.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical diagrams and wiring schematics.
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn complex C4ISR systems.
  • Basic troubleshooting skills and familiarity with diagnostic tools.
  • Ability to work in fast-paced production environments with hands-on technical tasks.

Education & Experience
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in IT, Network Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
  • Equivalent military technical training (IT, ET, IC, FC, CT, or similar) accepted.
  • 3-7 years of experience in network engineering, IT support, or electronics/communications.
  • Certifications preferred: CCNA, Network+, Security+.

Clearance
  • Active Secret clearance required or ability to obtain.

Physical Demands
  • Ability to lift and install equipment up to 40 lbs.
  • Frequent standing, bending, and working in confined rack spaces.
  • Ability to work in secure production facilities and occasionally aboard ships or remote sites.

Work Environment
  • Production floor, integration labs, and secure facilities.
  • Exposure to powered equipment, cabling, tools, and ESD-sensitive components.
  • Fast-paced environment requiring precision and adherence to standards.
