Job description

Field Service Technician – Automated Equipment (Direct Hire)

Location: South Elgin / Belvidere, IL (local to Elgin area)
Pay: Up to $42/hr
Travel: Up to 25%, well-planned, home on weekends

We’re hiring a Service Technician to support the assembly, testing, installation, and service of custom automated equipment. This is a direct-hire role with stable travel expectations and a strong mix of shop and field work — ideal for a field service technician looking to reduce on-call duties and overall travel without giving up hands-on automation work.

When not traveling, you’ll be based locally in the shop supporting machine builds, troubleshooting, and final testing. Travel is scheduled in advance and designed to keep technicians home on weekends.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Assemble, test, debug, and troubleshoot custom automated machinery in the shop
  • Perform field installations, service, and warranty support at customer sites
  • Support final quality and performance testing prior to shipment
  • Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, and control-related issues
  • Assist with customer acceptance testing, demonstrations, and training
  • Document field issues and feedback to support engineering and manufacturing improvements
  • Work out of both the South Elgin and Belvidere locations as needed
What We’re Looking For
  • 3+ years experience as a Service Technician, Field Service Technician, or Lead Machine Builder
  • Background in automation equipment (assembly, test, or service)
  • Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to read and interpret 3D CAD drawings, electrical, pneumatic, and mechanical schematics
  • Working knowledge of PLC systems (ability to read ladder logic; basic edits a plus)
  • Comfortable with hand tools and basic machine shop equipment
  • Associate’s degree, technical certificate, or equivalent hands-on experience
Why This Role Stands Out
  • Up to $42/hr based on experience
  • Direct hire with long-term stability
  • Travel capped at ~25% and well planned
  • Home on weekends
  • Strong balance of shop work and field service
  • Ideal step for a field service tech seeking less travel and fewer on-call demands

Qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, age, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, or genetic information.
