About the team and position
We need to be super approachable and always willing to go above and beyond to help our Carvana family. It could be as simple as connecting their monitor to as complicated as tuning their flux capacitor to precisely 1.21 gigawatts! We expect smart people who are doers with bright ideas, willing to put their game-face on, take on new challenges and juggle many assignments at once.
"Where hardware meets software," our Car Vending Machine Engineer will bridge the gap between Mechanical and Software Engineering. We're looking for someone with an interest in mechanics and robotics who also happens to dig programming and scripting. You will be involved in the full customer experience of vending a car, and "Vending Machine Repairman" will look great on your resume.
What you'll be doing
  • Working on our one-of-a-kind, state-of-the-art, car vending machines. The vending machines have a myriad of motors and controllers throughout them and we are looking for someone to help maintain and extend the programming of these systems.
  • Extending the functionality of the vending machines. We would love for you to work on some web and mobile applications to create new user experiences for our employees working the vending machine and our customers picking up their vehicles.
  • Supporting other teams within Vending Machine Services in troubleshooting and operating our electromechanical systems.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What you should have
  • Experience with PLC-based motion control systems like Beckhoff TwinCAT.
  • Knowledge of VFD motors and control equipment like SEW EuroDrive.
  • Familiarity with low voltage control circuits, sensors, detectors, limit switches, I/O systems
  • Understanding of fieldbus operation like CANbus, EtherCAT, & Profinet.
  • Competent troubleshooting of solutions across electrical, mechanical, and process control domains as an upper tier of our support structure.
  • Interest in creating HMIs that are not just functional but practical and useful.
  • Ability to work with plant engineers, external vendors, operators, and management to manage projects and assignments.
  • Knowledge of development using tools such as Python and javascript is an absolute plus.
  • The ability to wear many hats. There are many different systems at play and many new ones to be created.
  • Some travel will be required as our vending machines are located across the country.

To be able to do your job at Carvana, there are some basic requirements we want to share with you.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English.
  • Must be able to lift up to 70 pounds independently; majority of lifting from knee to shoulder heights; other lifting required from various levels.
  • Must be able to carry and transport up to 70 pounds up to 20 feet.
  • Requires excellent visual acuity and manual dexterity.
