Associate Defense Attorney information

What is an associate defense attorney?

Associate Defense Attorneys are licensed lawyers who work under the supervision of more senior attorneys within a law firm or public defender's office. They focus on defending clients accused of crimes by conducting legal research, drafting motions, attending court hearings, and assisting in trial preparation. Associates are typically early in their legal careers and gain practical experience by working closely with experienced defense attorneys on a variety of criminal cases.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate defense attorney?

To thrive as an Associate Defense Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, bar admission, strong legal research, and case analysis skills. Familiarity with legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis, as well as courtroom and case management software, is typically required. Outstanding written and verbal communication, critical thinking, and negotiation skills help you build strong client relationships and advocate effectively. These skills ensure accurate representation, effective case strategy, and successful outcomes for clients in complex legal environments.

What are some common challenges faced by an associate defense attorney during their initial years, and how can they be addressed?

Associate Defense Attorneys often encounter challenges such as managing a high caseload, learning to navigate court procedures, and balancing client expectations with legal realities. In the early years, it can be difficult to build confidence in the courtroom and develop effective negotiation skills. These challenges are best addressed by seeking mentorship from senior attorneys, actively participating in case strategy discussions, and dedicating time to stay updated on legal precedents and local court rules. Strong organizational skills and open communication with team members also help in managing workload and client relationships effectively.

Job description

Construction Defect Attorney

We are a Denver boutique that defends builders, developers, and contractors in complex construction defect and casualty matters. Recognized as a Denver Business Journal Best Place to Work, we give attorneys real courtroom and client responsibility from day one. This role exists so our clients get efficient, excellent results while you grow into a recognized construction litigator.

Performance Objectives
  • Take primary ownership of construction defect files from intake through mediation, trial, or settlement, driving cases to resolution on time and within client expectations.
  • Take and defend depositions of parties, experts, and fact witnesses that lock in key facts and strengthen our defense posture.
  • Draft, file, and argue dispositive and discovery motions that narrow issues or dispose of claims before trial.
  • Retain, prepare, and work with construction, engineering, and damages experts so their opinions hold up under scrutiny.
  • Participate in case strategy sessions with partners and clients, recommending practical next steps that control risk and cost.
  • Maintain regular, clear client contact so builders and insurers always know status, exposure, and recommended action.

Environment & Resources

You will work alongside recognized construction-litigation partners in a collaborative, team-oriented firm. Hybrid home/office flexibility, underground parking, monthly lunch-and-learns, and direct mentorship are standard. You report to assigning partners and have immediate access to experienced colleagues, CDLA membership, and covered Colorado Supreme Court dues. Compensation is apx. 125K-160K+ plus discretionary and production bonuses.

Essential Qualifications
  • 2–6+ years of civil litigation experience with demonstrated deposition, motion, and case-management skills.
  • Active Colorado bar admission (or ability to obtain promptly).
  • Genuine interest in construction defect and casualty defense; prior construction experience is required
  • Sound judgment, strong writing, and the ability to communicate clearly with clients, experts, and opposing counsel.
  • Willingness to learn specialized construction issues quickly and take ownership of files.

If you want to try cases, advise clients, and build a construction-defense practice inside a firm that values both results and people, apply today. We are ready to invest in your growth.
