Job description
Located in the fastest-growing region of the state, the University of North Georgia is a multi-campus university with an enrollment of over 20,000 students, making it one of the largest institutions in the University System of Georgia. Federally designated as a senior military college, one of the university's signature leadership programs is its 800-member Corps of Cadets on UNG's Dahlonega Campus.
Department Information
Currently, the Department of Computer Science and Cybersecurity (CSCY) resides in the College of Science and Mathematics (CSM). The department holds ABET accreditation for the B.S. degree in computer science. In addition to the CSCY Department, CSM houses the UNG Institute for Cyber Operations, the Environmental Leadership Center, and the Departments of Biology, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Mathematics, Physics & Astronomy. This composition strategically aligns the University of North Georgia to pursue the Big Bets and Moonshots proposed by the President
The CSCY Department houses several undergraduate and graduate programs, including the Associate Computer Science Pathway, Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity, Master of Science in Computer Science, and Cybersecurity Graduate Certificate. The department also offers minors in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information Assurance and Security, Machine Learning, and Mobile App Development. The College of Science and Mathematics offers additional B.S. degrees in biology, chemistry, chemistry with a biochemistry concentration, chemistry with a chemical physics concentration, chemical engineering dual degree, mathematics, mathematics with teacher certification, mathematics and engineering dual degree, physics, physics with astrophysics concentration, and physics/engineering dual degree. In addition, CSM offers seven associate degrees and a number of minors.
The department works closely with the UNG Institute for Cyber Operations, funded through a multi-million-dollar, multi-year DoD grant, and holds the designation as a National Center for Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense by the Department of Homeland Security and the National Security Agency. The Department is also home to additional federal grants to support cybersecurity education. The UNG Cyberhawks student team has won the national NSA Codebreaker Challenge for two years in a row, ranking first among over 400 other universities participating each year. The department is housed in the new Cottrell Center for Business, Technology & Innovation. The Cottrell Center has several specialized labs for teaching programs housed in the department.
Approximately 1,300 students are currently majoring in computer science, computer science pathway, and cybersecurity. The diverse group of faculty provides an exceptional learning community to prepare students for their professional roles and to engage with business and industry in the region to foster economic development.
Job Summary
The College of Science & Mathematics at the University of North Georgia invites applicants to join this dynamic department as the Department Head of Computer Science and Cybersecurity. The successful candidate will provide vision and leadership for the 20+ full-time faculty members in the department and will have teaching experience and research interests in computer science, artificial intelligence, and/or cybersecurity. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in teaching, scholarship and engagement in discipline-related professional organizations, and an overall record that qualifies for a tenured, associate or full professor rank. The start date is July 1, 2026, and the position is a 12-month full-time appointment. Review of applications will be ongoing until the position is filled.

Responsibilities
- Lead the department in continuing to build its reputation within and outside the College and the University of North Georgia as a leader in cybersecurity and other computer science areas.
- Oversee the development, evaluation, and revision of curricula to incorporate emerging trends (AI, cybersecurity, quantum computing, cloud computing, etc.).
- Ensure that practices comply with university policies and align with accreditation requirements.
- Support faculty development and scholarship.
- Serve as a member of the CSM Executive Team.
- Provide excellent teaching in CS and/or Cyber courses, teaching 9 semester hours per year.
- Guide the department in maintaining its ABET accreditation for the CS program.
- Guide the department in earning ABET accreditation for the Cybersecurity and the Master of Science in Computer Science programs.
- Work collaboratively with the UNG Institute for Cyber Operations.
- Actively engage with the Computer Science and Cybersecurity Advisory Board.
- Foster relationships with CS/Cyber industry colleagues to support partnerships, joint projects, and internships.
- Continue to engage in quality scholarship within the discipline and/or engage in professional activities in the computer science and/or cybersecurity academic community.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Required Qualifications
- A Ph.D. in computer science, cybersecurity, or closely related field is required at the time of appointment.
- Record of teaching excellence; quality research in computer science and/or cybersecurity; and engagement in disciplinary-based academic professional organizations qualifying the successful candidate for tenure and at least the rank of associate professor at time of appointment.
