Job description

The Neurophysiology Technologist (EMG/NCS) performs diagnostic studies to evaluate the function of patients' peripheral nervous systems using nerve conduction studies. This role works closely with neurologists to ensure high-quality data is collected to support diagnosis and treatment planning.

Patient Preparation:Greet and escort patients to the examination room.Explain that the test has two parts: The technologist performs the NCS (Nerve Conduction Study), and the physician completes the EMG (Electromyography).Explain the NCS procedure in an understandable and reassuring manner to alleviate patient anxiety and answer basic questions.Obtain relevant patient history pertinent to the study, including symptoms, medical conditions, and medications.Prepare the patient's skin by cleaning and abrading as necessary for optimal electrode placement.Position patients appropriately for various nerve studies.

Procedure Execution:Perform nerve conduction studies (NCS) in correlation with EMG performed by physician, to assist physicians in diagnosis and monitoring of neurological conditions.Apply stimulating and recording electrodes accurately and consistently according to established protocols.Operate and calibrate NCS equipment, ensuring proper machine function.Monitor patients' vital signs and reactions during procedures to ensure their safety and comfort.Recognize and troubleshoot technical artifacts during recordings.Accurately record study results and analyze them for abnormalities or patterns that may indicate a neurological condition.Document all relevant information, including patient demographics, study parameters, electrode placements, and any patient complaints or observations during the study.

Collaboration and Communication:Work closely with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care to patients.Alert neurologists to any unusual findings or patient discomfort.Provide education to patients and their families regarding the procedure; refer diagnostic discussions to the physician.Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA.

Equipment and Supplies Management:Ensure all equipment is properly maintained, cleaned and functioning correctly.Monitor inventory of supplies and electrodes, ordering as needed.Report malfunctions or issues promptly.

Administrative and Professional Development:Maintain accurate and organized patient records.Adhere to all hospital/clinic policies, procedures and safety protocols.Participate in continuing education to remain current with advancements in neurophysiology.Assist in training new staff members as required.
