Overview

Location: Fort Richardson, AK

Hours of Performance: The performance hours of the MTF are as follows: In general, all Dental Clinics are open between the hours of 0600-1700, Monday-Friday. Routine Clinic hours may vary by location.

Regular dental services may be scheduled between 0600 hrs. (6:00 a.m.) and 2200 (10:00 p.m.) hrs. Monday through Friday, excluding U.S. Federal holidays. Depending on mission requirements, services may be required on weekends.

Responsibilities
  • The dental assistants shall perform essentially the same duties as those required of any military or government civil service dental assistant of similar experience and in similar duty assignments.
  • Services will be confined to chair side dental assisting, Radiology, or sterilization.
  • They may be occasionally needed for patient scheduling or records review but may not work routinely as a medical clerk or receptionist.
  • Obtains and records related medical history of patient. Charts examination and treatment information.
  • Records information on prescriptions.
  • Sterilizes instruments, materials, and equipment; prepares surgical trays. Maintains dentalequipment in a clean and operative condition.
  • Assists dentist at chair side. Performs intra-oral procedures as directed by dentist.
  • Takes preliminary impressions for study models, removes sutures, places and removes rubber dams, perio-packs, matrix bands, and wedges.
  • Relays dentist's instructions to patient for post-treatment care. Instructs patient in proper dental techniques, care of appliances, and causes of dental decay.
  • Operates dental X-ray equipment to take intra and extra oral radiographs. Maintains, cleans, and performs minor repairs on X-ray equipment and materials.
  • Pours and trims models from impressions, and constructs custom impression trays.
  • Maintains a variety of recurring reports related to dental activities.
Qualifications

Education: All dental assistants shall be a graduate from a formal dental assistant training program. The training or education program must include coursework on radiation physics, biology, health, safety/protection, X- ray films/digital radiography, image quality, and radiographic techniques that meets or exceeds 42 C.F.R. Part 75 (Credentialing of Radiologic Personnel) requirements. A list of 42 C.F.R. Part 42 compliant programs is available from the COTR. To petition to add a program to the verified list, a completed radiographic certification sheet may be provided to the COTR (Exhibit 4). If a candidate's radiographic training is found to be unacceptable or cannot be verified, a 42 C.F.R. compliant program must be completed prior to beginning work on the contract.

Experience: Have a minimum of six (6) months of clinical dental assisting experience within the last three years.

Certification: Shall be certified in basic Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) that is approved by the American Red Cross or American Heart Association and reads Healthcare Provider Course in the subjects listed prior to beginning performance at the Dental Health.
