What is an associate advisor?

An Associate Advisor is an entry- to mid-level professional who assists senior financial advisors or planners in providing financial advice and services to clients. Their responsibilities often include preparing financial plans, conducting research, gathering client information, and supporting client meetings. Associate Advisors typically work toward building their own client base while gaining experience and professional certifications. This role is a common stepping stone to becoming a lead financial advisor or planner.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate advisor?

To thrive as an Associate Advisor, you need a solid understanding of financial planning, investment principles, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a relevant degree and licenses such as Series 7 or 66. Familiarity with financial planning software, CRM systems, and portfolio management tools is essential. Strong interpersonal skills, active listening, and attention to detail help build trust with clients and support collaborative team environments. These skills and qualities are vital for delivering sound financial advice, ensuring compliance, and fostering lasting client relationships.

Job description

About Us
Dentist Advisors has grown from a small startup into a nationwide leader in personal financial planning and investment management for dentists. Our deep expertise in the dental industry, combined with a strong commitment to technology and education, allows us to deliver proactive, personalized financial advice to dentists across the country.
We are a fast-growing firm that values collaboration, clear communication, adaptability, and follow-through, all while keeping work enjoyable. If you are looking for a dynamic environment where you can grow your career in financial services, we would love to hear from you.
The Role
We're hiring an Associate Advisor to support our advisors and help deliver an exceptional client experience. This role is ideal for someone with experience in financial services who enjoys organization, communication, and being a key part of a client-focused team.
You'll own the workflow for your assigned advisor's book of business-making sure every commitment is tracked, every deadline is met, and every client interaction is well-prepared. You'll become deeply familiar with the clients you support: their plans, their preferences, and the rhythm of their service.
The role involves regular client-facing interaction-attending meetings, following up on outstanding items, coordinating next steps, and ensuring clients have what they need between advisor meetings.
This is a great opportunity if you're an aspiring financial advisor who wants to learn from a seasoned advisor, gain exposure to real planning work, get more comfortable with client interactions, and ultimately move on to manage clients of your own.
What You'll Do
  • Workflow Ownership: Track all open cases, tasks, and follow-up items for your assigned advisor's clients. Nothing should fall through the cracks.
  • Client Service Coordination: Ensure clients receive timely responses and that all commitments made in meetings are actioned. Serve as a point of contact for tactical client questions and requests.
  • Meeting Preparation: Make sure your advisor has everything they need going into client meetings - updated plans, outstanding items, relevant context, and a clear agenda.
  • CSA Task Assignment and Audit: Assign tasks to the Client Service Associate team and review the quality of their output. You are accountable for the work that comes out of the queue for your clients.
  • Deadline Management: Proactively manage timelines across all deliverables and flag anything at risk of slipping before it becomes a problem.
  • Training Future Associates: As you gain experience and seek promotion to the next level, you may be involved in onboarding or training a new Associate Advisor.

A great Associate Advisor makes their advisor's job easier - not by doing the advisor's work, but by ensuring the operational side runs so smoothly that the advisor can focus entirely on client relationships and business development. The benchmark is simple: your advisor should never have to chase a deadline, wonder where a task stands, or walk into a client meeting underprepared.
What Makes You a Great Fit
Personality
    • You're committed to financial services and excited to pursue a career as a financial advisor
    • You thrive in a fast-paced environment and adapt easily as needs change
    • You take initiative, solve problems independently, and stay one step ahead of what needs to be done
    • You're highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to juggle multiple tasks without losing focus
    • You enjoy building relationships, collaborating with your team, and creating a positive experience for clients

Skills & Qualifications
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills
    • Excellent organization and time-management abilities
    • Experience working in a deadline-driven environment
    • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
    • Familiarity with financial services, client service roles, or professional office settings
    • Comfortable learning new systems and managing data accurately
    • A BA/BS degree in a related field

Bonus Points
    • CFP® certification, or actively working toward it
    • Experience or interest in financial planning, financial operations, or client service in a professional services firm
    • Familiarity with Salesforce, eMoney, Black Diamond, or Charles Schwab
