This is a Full-Time 40 Hours Weekly position with the Department of Social Services. For more information on the DSS, please visit https://dss.sd.gov.
The Content Creator serves as a key communications professional responsible for developing, designing, editing, and producing high quality materials that support the mission, programs, and public outreach of the Human Services Center (HSC). This position is also an integral part of the Department of Social Services (DSS) Communications Team, ensuring all content is accurate, clear, consistent, and aligned with state communication standards and accessibility requirements.
The ideal candidate is a compelling storyteller who can craft engaging video, graphic, photographic, social media, and audio content to connect with diverse and changing audiences. This role also contributes to internal communications, including updating legacy training materials and producing new instructional content.
Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as a core member of both HSC staff and the DSS Communications Team.
  • Produce written, visual, and multimedia content for websites, social media, press materials, newsletters, public information campaigns, and internal communications.
  • Translate policies, programs, or technical information into clear and accessible public facing content.
  • Collaborate with program staff, communications professionals, leadership, and partner agencies to gather information and ensure message accuracy.
  • Support and contribute to HSC and DSS public awareness campaigns.
  • Plan, coordinate, and maintain content calendars for digital platforms.
  • Create graphics, infographics, and video content.
  • Attend events to capture videos, photos, and other media for social platforms and publications.
  • Ensure all content complies with state brand guidelines, accessibility standards (e.g., ADA/Section 508), and legal requirements.
  • Assist with emergency or rapid-response communications as needed.
  • Provide backup support to Communications Team members.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Work Environment:
  • Fast paced communications setting supporting agency priorities.
  • Frequent collaboration with staff across divisions and with leadership.
  • Occasional after hours or short turnaround work during urgent communications needs.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
  • bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, marketing, journalism, graphic design, or a related field; or equivalent professional experience;
  • strong writing, editing, and storytelling abilities;
  • experience with video editing and/or data visualization;
  • ability to quickly understand government programs, policies, and terminology;
  • experience with web content management systems, social media platforms, and graphic design tools;
  • exceptional attention to detail and commitment to accuracy;
  • ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines;
  • strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively collaborate with subject matter experts and leadership.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities to:
