Job description

GENERAL FUNCTION:

Provides competitive swimming instructions to swim team members in various age groups. Organizes and conducts team workouts.

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES / POSITION RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Ability to lead and motivate team members.
  • Ability to make good decisions, exercising mature judgement.
  • Ability to interpret YMCA aquatic program philosophy.
  • Knowledge of sound competitive swimming skills, and the ability to implement and teach these skills in a positive, healthy manner.
  • Knowledge of basic exercise and perform assigned coaching responsibilities, which may include practices, recruiting, record-keeping, and scheduling.
  • Recruits prospective members and provides information about YMCA membership and swim team fee structure.
  • Attends all staff meetings, and trainings as required. Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
  • Assists with overseeing conduct of swim team members at meets and other team functions.
  • Attends swim meets and swim team functions as agreed upon with supervisor.
  • Maintains effective communication with participants and their parents.

KNOW-HOW:

  • The assistant swim team coach must have an aquatic background including knowledge in lifeguarding, instructing, and training.
  • They must be certified in YMCA (or American Red Cross) Lifeguarding and Swim Instruction certification is encouraged. This position also requires current CPR and First-Aid. A assistant swim team coach who is not YMCA certified must obtain these certifications within 12 months of employment.
  • The assistant swim coach should be knowledgeable of all the rules and regulations related to competition and the use of aquatic facilities in accordance with the Aquatic Handbook and the YMCA Principles of Competitive Swimming.
