What is an assistant superintendent?

Assistant Superintendents are professionals who support the Superintendent in the management and administration of schools or construction projects, depending on the industry. In education, they help oversee curriculum, personnel, budgeting, and daily operations within a school district. In construction, they assist with project planning, on-site supervision, coordination of subcontractors, and ensuring safety compliance. Their role is essential for smooth operations and effective communication among teams. Assistant Superintendents often step in for the Superintendent when needed and play a vital role in overall success.

What does an assistant superintendent do?

As an assistant superintendent, your job duties depend on the industry in which you work and the needs of the superintendent. You may work in a school district where you handle administrative responsibilities, develop district policy and curriculum, oversee issues related to students, and support the efforts of the district superintendent. If you work as a construction superintendent, you provide job site management of both employees and contractors. In a manufacturing assistant superintendent role, you help manage manufacturing operations by overseeing employees and performing inspections to ensure that each product or project meets required specifications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant superintendent, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistant Superintendent, you need strong leadership, project management, and construction knowledge, often backed by a relevant degree or equivalent field experience. Familiarity with construction management software, scheduling tools like Microsoft Project or Procore, and safety certifications such as OSHA 30 are typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and team coordination skills help you stand out in this role. These abilities are crucial for effectively overseeing job sites, ensuring safety and quality standards, and delivering projects on time and within budget.

What are some common challenges faced by assistant superintendents on construction sites, and how can they be managed?

Assistant Superintendents often encounter challenges such as coordinating multiple subcontractors, handling schedule changes, and ensuring site safety compliance. Managing these challenges requires strong organizational skills, clear communication, and the ability to adapt quickly to shifting project demands. Building solid relationships with both the project manager and field crews helps streamline problem-solving and keeps the project on track. Proactively addressing issues and maintaining detailed documentation are also key strategies for success in this role.

If you’re ready to grow your career in fast-paced, high-spec environments and enjoy helping turn complex plans into coordinated field execution, this is your opportunity to make an impact.

Why Join FCL Builders?

  • Build Industry-Leading Projects: Support the delivery of cutting-edge, mission-critical data center facilities.
  • Become an Employee Owner: Partner with experienced professionals who are invested in your success.

  • Great People, Great Workplace: FCL is proud to be a Great Place to Work–Certified company where culture comes first.

What You’ll Do:

Pre-Construction & Planning

  • Assist with reviewing contract requirements, drawings, specifications, and MEP scopes to understand project expectations.
  • Collaborate with the MEP Superintendent, Project Manager, Project Engineer, and other Superintendents on site setup, sequencing, and logistics.
  • Participate in site walks to document existing conditions and help identify preconstruction risks.
  • Support long-lead item tracking, trade mobilization planning, and permitting coordination with AHJs.
  • Assist with BIM coordination reviews to help identify constructability concerns and potential clashes.

Project Execution & Field Leadership

  • Support daily site operations and assist with coordination of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, low-voltage, and building automation systems.
  • Track work progress, assist with T&M documentation, and provide field information to support forecasting and cost control efforts.
  • Participate in daily and weekly subcontractor coordination meetings and follow up on assigned action items.
  • Help identify field issues or delays early and elevate recommended mitigation plans to the MEP Superintendent.
  • Assist with field inspections to verify installation accuracy, quality, and design compliance.
  • Maintain accurate daily logs, field documentation, as-built notes, and RFI support materials.
  • Support MEP schedule updates, commissioning readiness, sequencing, material flow, and BIM-based installation planning.

Team, Client & Safety Leadership

  • Represent FCL professionally on site while supporting strong relationships with owners, consultants, inspectors, and trade partners.
  • Communicate with field teams to help align scope, schedule, responsibilities, and daily work plans.
  • Support jobsite safety by participating in toolbox talks, JHAs, site orientations, and enforcement of site-specific safety protocols.
  • Help maintain compliance with building codes, facility rules, client requirements, and FCL safety standards.

What We’re Looking For:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 3 years of field experience in commercial, industrial, or mission-critical construction, with exposure to MEP coordination preferred.
  • Working knowledge of construction sequencing, subcontractor coordination, site logistics, and quality control.
  • Familiarity with MEP systems, critical infrastructure, commissioning activities, and technical field documentation.
  • Ability to support daily reporting, field coordination, issue tracking, and follow-through on active job sites.

Nice to Have:

  • OSHA 30 Certification.
  • Proficiency with Procore, Bluebeam, Microsoft Project, BIM, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Familiarity with IST protocols, commissioning documentation, and system turnover processes.

What We Offer:

  • Competitive salary, bonus structure
  • Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP)
  • Career development and mentorship programs
  • Comprehensive and competitive benefits (health, dental, vision and so much more!)
  • Paid time off and holidays
  • An inclusive, collaborative culture where your voice matters
