Summary/Objective: The Surface Mount Technology (SMT) Engineer is a self-motivated contributor working with internal and external customers to assist in the design and development of new and existing products, provide processing-related technical customer support and research new and improved methods for processing Samtec interconnects. A thorough understanding of SMT electronic assembly including solder printing processes, pick & place, reflow thermal profiling, automatic inspection, cleaning, x-ray analysis, electrical / functional testing and SMT troubleshooting is required.
Essential Functions/Responsibilities:
  1. Member of a cross-functional team comprised of design engineering, manufacturing, quality, sales and marketing to support existing product improvement, customer quality issues and sales and marketing strategies
  2. Understand every aspect of a full SMT line in order to help customers troubleshoot processing issues they encounter with Samtec interconnects. This would occasionally include travel to the customer's location to provide hands-on guidance but most of this work is done remotely.
  3. Assist new product design and develop processing recommendations including:
    • Printed wiring board footprint layout
    • Solder stencil layout
    • Solder joint classification
    • Pick and place requirements
    • Shipping packaging requirements
    • Rework procedure
  4. Review and approve engineering drawings (printed wiring boards, solder stencils, connectors, etc.)
  5. Assist in internal equipment maintenance and procurement.

Required Experience:
  1. Minimum 5 years of manufacturing with a focus in SMT process engineering formal training and/or work experience
  2. Must be a self-starter with strong organizational and time management skills
  3. Demonstrated problem solving ability and attention to detail
  4. Strong technical writing ability
  5. Candidates must have a solid understanding of statistics, process control and reliability standards (IPC, JEDEC, MIL)
  6. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  7. Excellent follow-up skills
  8. Proficiency with MS Office applications
  9. Experience in SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Gerber or other engineering design, modeling or simulation software is desirable.

Education:
  1. Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent is required.
